  • Patent number: 6572291
Abstract: A print media handling system for feeding print media into a media inlet of a printer is disclosed. The print media handling system includes a media feeder for feeding print media along a media path towards the media inlet. At least one trimming element is disposed along the media path for trimming fed print media to a predetermined width prior to the print media entering the media inlet. A printer that includes a print media handling system described above is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20030053836
Abstract: A device having a mechanical safety interlock is disclosed. The device has at least one moveable part contained in a housing. The moveable part is accessible through an opening in the housing. The device includes a cover for covering the opening. The mechanical safety interlock includes an actuator attached to the cover and a mechanical driver supported in the housing adjacent the moveable part. The driver is biased away from the moveable part to a disengaged position to interrupt transmission of mechanical movement from the driver to the moveable part. When the cover is brought to cover the opening, the actuator engages the driver to bring the driver to an engaged position to allow the moveable part to tap mechanical movement of the driver to thereby be driven.

  • Patent number: 6450713
Abstract: An output roller for propelling a media sheet, for example in a printer, is disclosed. A plurality of protrusions is selectively positioned on the output roller. As the media sheet exists a media path, the rear edge of the media sheet is caught by the protrusions and the rear edge is further pushed forward into an output stack. Preferably, the protrusions are flexible.

  • Patent number: 6195151
Abstract: A media sheet handling system for duplex printing is disclosed. During duplex printing, the media sheet whose first side is printed is directed into a duplex print path, wherein the media sheet is reversed to a flipped over state with respect to its original position and the original leading edge is maintained to be the leading edge for subsequent printing.

  • Patent number: 6148727
Abstract: A printer having a system to manage the output path of wet printed media is disclosed. In such a system, the wet printed media are held for a time before being ejected into an output tray to avoid the smearing of the wet print markings made on the media. The system achieves this holding time by causing the wet printed media to travel an additional distance over movable ramps before being ejected. In addition, the movements of the ramps are synchronized with the various operations in the printing cycle of the printer.

  • Patent number: 6140662
Abstract: A sensing system is used to sense when a stack of sheet material reaches a critical height. A light beam is shone onto a region on the surface of the stack to form a lighted area. Changes in the height of the stack of sheet material results in changes in size of the lighted area of the beam shining on the surface of the stack. A light detector monitors a zone on the stack surface in which the amount of light being monitored as shining on the zone varies in accordance with changes in size of the lighted area. The detection system detects when the lighted area has reached a predetermined size by detecting when the light shining on the zone has reached a predetermined point. The system then provides an indication that the stack surface has reached a critical height, in other words that the stack surface has reached a critical distance from the light source.

  • Patent number: 5615874
Abstract: A media separation system is provided for separating individual sheets from a stack of media. The media separation system has a pressure plate positioned at an angle to support the stack of sheets along an incline. The pressure plate has an upper and lower end, with a relieved area formed in the lower end of the pressure plate. The media separation system also has a pick roller disposed in juxtaposition to the relieved area of the pressure plate to engage and separate a top sheet from the stack of sheets. The pick roller has a width that is more narrow than that of the relieved area in the pressure plate. A spring-like mechanism is provided to urge the pressure plate toward the pick roller to cause the pick roller and the pressure plate to work cooperatively to depress the sheets of media beneath the pick roller into the relieved area of the pressure plate. This causes formation of a primary depression in the stack of sheets.
