  • Patent number: 8449750
Abstract: A separating system for separating a fluid mixture incorporates a smart surface having reversibly switchable properties. A voltage is selectively applied to the smart surface to attract or repel constituents of a fluid mixture, such as oil and water produced from a hydrocarbon well. The smart surface can be used in a conditioner to increase droplet size prior to entering a conventional separator, or the smart surface and other elements of the invention can be incorporated into an otherwise conventional separator to enhance separation. In a related aspect, a concentration sensor incorporating smart surfaces senses concentration of the fluid mixture's constituents.

  • Patent number: 7061932
Abstract: A downhole telemetry system employing code division multiple access (CDMA) is disclosed. In one embodiment, the downhole telemetry system comprises one or more downhole transmitters and an uphole receiver. Each of the downhole transmitters transmits a corresponding uplink signal which is generated using amplitude modulation of corresponding code word signals. The code word signals are orthogonal to each other, and the transmitters may be configured to adjust the timing to assure synchronous arrival of the various uplink signals at the receiver. Each of the transmitters may be allocated a different number of code words when it is desired to allow for unequal bandwidth requirements. Such allocation is preferably dynamic. Additional modulation techniques may be employed with CDMA, including frequency division multiplexing, time division multiplexing, and frequency re-use.

  • Patent number: 6808024
Abstract: A seal assembly (60) for controlling the flow of fluids in an annulus (68) between a continuous tubular (62) and a cased wellbore (64) is disclosed. The seal assembly (60) includes anchor slips (72) and a seal element (78). The seal assembly (60) is actuated by communicating hydraulic fluid to a setting assembly (82) via an operating fluid conduit integral with the tubular (62). Upon actuation, the setting assembly (82) axially shifts a pair of slip ramps (74, 76) which radially expands the anchor slips (72) into gripping engagement with the wellbore (64) and radially expands the seal element (78) into sealing engagement with the wellbore (64).

  • Patent number: 4527954
Abstract: A multiple-mode, multiplex pumping apparatus includes circuit control elements for initializing the apparatus by placing each of the pistons and plungers in each pumping section of the multiplex pumping apparatus at a respective initial starting point. The pumping apparatus also includes electronic circuit elements for controlling the inlet valves, exhaust valves and precompression valves of the hydraulic circuit of the pumping apparatus. The apparatus includes phase control circuit elements for controlling the separation of the leading edges of the plungers of two of the pumping sections of the apparatus when the apparatus is operating as a quadruplex pump. The pumping apparatus also includes elecrtronic circuit elements for insuring that each plunger of each pumping section stops at a fixed stopping point. The apparatus also includes electronic circuit elements for controlling the volume of fluid in the rod end portions of each of the pumping sections.

  • Patent number: 4057059
Abstract: A ventilator implemented completely with fluidic devices provides independent control of inhalation time, exhalation time and breathing gas flow rate. The basic fluidic system comprises a low frequency oscillator which in the form of a flip flop is controlled in its two stable states by means of independently controlled time delay relays. The output of the flip flop is amplified by a digital amplifier and operates an on-off valve which is used to direct breathing gas from the source to the patient. Independent control of the flow rate of the breathing gas is by means of a needle valve. With this basic fluidic system, there are seven other features of the apparatus. One is a maximum pressure control which on inhalation is responsive to the patient's breathing air pressure. The second feature is a sensitivity control, which during exhalation is responsive to the patient inspiratory effort. The third feature is a positive end exhalation pressure control.
