  • Patent number: 7289857
Abstract: Data from a monitoring system is analyzed for monitoring characteristics of a dynamic system. Characteristic data in respect of a dynamic system is monitored and provided with at least one known normal state. Characteristic data is received from a monitoring system and confirmation information from an operator when the dynamic system is in a known normal state. A normality model is derived including comprising data indicative of known normal states in response to received characteristic data and confirmation information. Future characteristic data is predicted from the normality model a difference function is provided indicating an acceptable difference between predicted and received characteristic data. Predicted characteristic data is compared with received characteristic data in conjunction with the difference function and an abnormality signal is produced if the difference exceeds the difference function.

  • Patent number: 7206770
Abstract: An apparatus and operating method for generating a second one or more sequences of elements after receiving a first one or more sequence of elements. The apparatus includes an identifying device that receives a first one or more sequence of elements, accesses stored sequences, and identifies which of the stored sequences each of the first one or more received sequences of elements most closely resembles. The identifying device is operable to output for each received sequence of elements, an identifying signal indicative of the correspondingly identified stored sequence. The apparatus further includes a sequence generator that generates sequences of elements, operates to receive an input, an identifying signal, and generates a sequence of elements in response thereto.

  • Publication number: 20070016571
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for generating, from an input set of documents, a word replaceability matrix defining semantic similarity between words occurring in the input document set. For each word, distinct word sequences of predetermined length are identified from the documents of the set, each word sequence being indicative of the context in which the word was used and, according to the relative frequency of occurrence of the identified word sequences for the word, fuzzy sets are generated for each word comprising membership values for corresponding groups of word sequences. For each pair of words occurring in the document set, their respective fuzzy sets are used to calculate the probability that the first word of a pair is semantically suitable as a replacement for the second word of the pair, these probabilities being collated to form a word similarity matrix for use in an improved method of determining document similarity and in information retrieval.

  • Publication number: 20070005406
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for use in scheduling events on behalf of a plurality of participating physical entities. The apparatus comprises evaluating means and scheduling means, the evaluating means being arranged to evaluate a received event request containing information about the event and to generate an input to the scheduling means with respect to one or more physical entities identified in the received event request. The evaluating means is arranged, on behalf of physical entities identified in the received event request, to calculate a value for each of a plurality of predetermined measures, including a measure of the importance of the requested event to an identified entity, using an appropriate rule set for each measure, and using a further rule set, to combine the calculated values and so derive and output a value representative of the overall degree of support by the identified physical entity for the requested event, for input to the scheduling means.

  • Publication number: 20060282298
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for deriving a user model from a plurality of event records relating to events, each event record comprising data relating to attributes of an event, the method comprising: identifying a plurality of sequences of event records from said plurality of event records, each sequence containing a plurality of event records; determining a plurality of sequence clusters from said plurality of sequences, each sequence cluster comprising a plurality of related sequences; analysing the sequences in a cluster and deriving one or more rules relating to the sequences of that cluster; and providing a user model based on rules derived in relation to a plurality of clusters. Methods and systems are also provided for using a user model for suggesting possible events, or sequences of events, which may follow or precede known events, and for determining a potential sequential order for a plurality of known events.

  • Publication number: 20060136405
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for improving database searching, the method comprising the steps of: receiving a search query comprising one or more search keywords from a user; accessing a user profile means arranged to provide data indicative of relatedness criteria between keywords from a set of documents, and identifying from said user profile means, for the or each search keyword, potentially-related keywords according to predetermined criteria; providing said potentially-related keywords to the user; receiving information from the user confirming that any potentially-related keywords are considered to be related keywords; in the event that any potentially-related keywords are confirmed by the user to be related keywords, incorporating such potentially-related keywords as keywords in an improved search query; and submitting the improved search query to a search engine.

  • Patent number: 6779060
Abstract: In a multi-modal user interface, user inputs may be made in various different ways. For instance, the user might use a keyboard, a speech system, a vision system, a mouse or pen. Different inputs made by the user may be related and may have different significance. A processing system detects and resolves ambiguities and/or conflicts in inputs made by the user using the different input modes available.
