Publication number: 20180229153Abstract: A method of electro treating tailings in a containment structure to cause a separation of at least some water from said tailings and a consolidation and compaction of at least some solid particles is shown. The method includes placing a plurality of first electrodes in the tailings to be treated generally along one side of a predetermined volume and placing a plurality of second electrodes in the tailings to be treated generally along an opposite side of said volume to the plurality of first electrodes, said first and second electrodes being spaced apart by a predetermined distance. The next step is applying a treatment current across said distance between said spaced first and second electrodes to create an electrical field which causes solids to consolidate at one of said plurality of first and second electrodes; and creating a geotechnical structure within said volume comprised of dewatered solids consolidated from said tailings around one of said electrodes.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 25, 2015Publication date: August 16, 2018Inventors: Bruce S. Beattie, Paul Garcia, Doug Kimzey, Ben HARRIS, Robert C. PARROTT, James MICAK, Robert FALERO

Patent number: 9428408Abstract: There is a method of facilitating the consolidation of fine tailings through the application of an electrical current. The fine tailings include a combination of at least some water and some clay particles. Electrodes are placed into contact with the fine tailings. An AC voltage with a DC offset is applied to the electrodes to separate water from the clay particles and to induce movement of the separated water to a collection area. The separated clay particles can consolidate more readily than unseparated clay particles. In an embodiment, the fine tailings are mixed fine oil sands extraction tailings which include residual hydrocarbons. In an embodiment, the application of an AC voltage with a DC offset across the electrodes includes applying an AC voltage of about 1 V/cm and a DC offset of about ½ V/cm.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2013Date of Patent: August 30, 2016Assignee: DPRA Canada IncorporatedInventors: Bruce S. Beattie, Paul Garcia, Doug Kimzey, Ben Harris, Robert C. Parrott, James Micak

Publication number: 20140008229Abstract: There is a method described of treating tailings which are composed of at least some water and clay particles. Within the tailings, at least some water molecules are weakly bond to the clay particles to form a gel like fluid from which water does not readily separate. An alternating current is applied to the tailings to change the electro-chemical properties of the tailings to reduce the weak bonding between the water and the clay particles so that water within the treated tailings is able to separate. Water within the treated tailings is then allowed to separate without further application of electricity. In some embodiments, the treated tailings are allowed to separate through evaporation. Liquid tailings may also be treated with alternating current by applying alternating current to the liquid tailings at a voltage gradient range of 1 to 5 V/cm for a total duration of 24 to 300 hours. The application of alternating current may further comprise applying alternating current at a frequency of 1 to 30 Hz.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 13, 2013Publication date: January 9, 2014Applicant: DPRA Canada IncorporatedInventors: Paul Garcia, Bruce S. Patent number: 4079991Abstract: This invention relates to rockers for mounting on the legs of chairs to convert the chairs to rocking chairs. The rockers are adaptable to be mounted on chairs having different spacings between the legs thereof, and to be mounted on chairs the bottoms of whose legs are connected by bars. The rockers are also adapted to be releasably or permanently mounted on the chairs. To fulfill all these functions, the inventive rocker, which consists of an arcuately shaped elongated member, has elongated openings adjacent the front and rear ends and on the top surface thereof. The elongated openings receive the legs of normal chairs. Extending across the width of the rocker, and over the elongated openings, are grooves which can receive the bars of chairs whose legs are connected by bars. As the openings are elongated the rockers can be mounted on chairs with different lengths of spacing between their front and rear legs.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1977Date of Patent: March 21, 1978Assignee: Jack HarrisInventor: Ben Harris
