Patent number: 6782153Abstract: The optical hybrid device includes input optical fiber(s), output optical fiber(s), a lens, a broadband or passband filter, a movable mirror, and an actuator operative to move the mirror or the filter. Depending on a voltage applied to the actuator, the actuator selectively sets the mirror or filter to each of a plurality of positions, so that selected portion(s) of radiation from one or more input beams carried by the input optical fiber(s) are conveyed to the output optical fiber(s); whereby the device performs two or more of the functions of wavelength division multiplexing or demultiplexing, attenuation, switching, filtering and tapping functions.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2001Date of Patent: August 24, 2004Assignee: DiCon Fiberoptics, Inc.Inventors: David Polinsky, Benedict J. Costello

Patent number: 6720710Abstract: A microsized pump is set forth. It comprises a substrate which at least partially defines one or more walls of a longitudinally extending tunnel. The tunnel has a vibratable wall portion. A sonic energy generator is positioned in sonic energy transmitting relation to the vibratable wall portion. The sonic energy generator is adapted to generate elastic waves which travel along the longitudinal extension of the tunnel. The pump is useful for moving material along the tunnel whereby chemical and biological analysis and reactions can be carried out on a micro scale.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1997Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: Berkeley Microinstruments, Inc.Inventors: Stuart W. Patent number: 6628856Abstract: The optical switch includes input optical fibers, output optical fibers, a lens, a movable mirror, and an actuator operative to move the mirror. Depending on a voltage applied to the actuator, the actuator selectively set the mirror to a first position corresponding to a first combination of optical paths, through which the light beam travels from the first set of the input optical fibers to the second set of the output optical fibers; and to a second position corresponding to a second combination of optical paths, through which the light beam travels from the first set to the second set. The first combination is different from the second combination, and a number of optical fibers of the first set and the second set is more than two.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2000Date of Patent: September 30, 2003Assignee: Dicon Fiberoptics, Inc.Inventors: Benedict J. Patent number: 5212988Abstract: An ultrasonic structure which has a thin planar sheet of material forming a Lamb wave propagation medium The propagation medium is coated with a gel. The structure may also include a Lamb wave generator for generating Lamb waves in the propagation medium and an output device for producing an electrical signal representative of the propagation characteristics of the Lamb waves propagating along the propagation medium. A measuring device can be included to measure selected characteristics of the output electrical signal. The propagation medium has some physical characteristics that are determined by the value of a measurand acting on the medium and the determined physical characteristics determine the propagation characteristics of the Lamb waves which are propagated along the medium. When the sensor is acted on by a measurand to determine the physical characteristics of the propagation medium, the characteristics of the electrical signal are also determined.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1991Date of Patent: May 25, 1993Assignee: The Reagents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Richard M. White, Stuart W. Wenzel, Benedict J. Costello
