  • Patent number: 6494275
Abstract: A rock drill bit for percussive drilling, especially top hammer drilling, includes a bit head provided with front rock crushing buttons and a skirt. The bit head is provided with a number of grooves formed in the outside of the skirt and extending in the axial direction of the drill bit. Protruding lands are defined between the grooves, which likewise extend in the axial direction. Axially rearward ends of at least some of the lands are formed with retrac teeth. Each retrac tooth has a cutting edge extending along an outer circumference of the skirt.

  • Patent number: 6209666
Abstract: In an air actuated down-the-hole hammer for rock drilling, a piston reciprocates within a casing to impact against a rear anvil surface of a drill bit. Upon making such impact, some fluid disposed between the impact surface and the anvil surface is forced radially inwardly toward a foot valve which fluidly inner connects central passages extending through the piston and the drill bit. In order to minimize the wear of the foot valve imposed by such forced fluid, either the piston or the drill bit includes a projection extending around a radially inner peripheral edge thereof for deflecting the forced fluid in a direction having an axial component to minimize an impact force of the fluid against the foot valve.

  • Patent number: 6182776
Abstract: Overburden drilling equipment for drilling a hole includes a down-the-hole hammer formed by a cylinder and a piston reciprocating in the cylinder due to pressurized water being directed alternately to the upper and lower ends of the piston. Each downward stroke inflicts an impact blow upon an anvil portion of a drill bit extending upwardly within the lower portion of the cylinder. A drill chuck is mounted at a lower end of the cylinder to receive the drill bit. A generally cylindrical casing shoe is attached to a casing and is rotatably connected to the drill bit to be longitudinally advanced thereby during drilling operation. The drill chuck includes at least one key which defines the largest radius of the drill chuck. The casing includes a diametrically reduced portion which has at least one keyway therein. The key and the diametrically reduced portion retain the hammer longitudinally in relation to the drill bit.
