  • Patent number: 4490988
Abstract: Means for shutting down operation of an enclosed motor compressor unit for air conditioning and heat pump service consists in immersing a pair of spaced electrodes having a potential gradient thereacross in the refrigerant-oil mixture in the unit enclosure and in employing the ion and electron flow across the electrodes resulting from contaminants in the mixture to break the motor energizing circuit through relay means, and in the provision of a normally open fusible switch responsive to close in response to a predetermined high motor temperature and through relay means break the motor energizing circuit. In a simplified modification, the immersed electrodes are directly connected across the power supply leads and cause a fusible link connected in the power supply leads to open and break the motor energizing circuit when sufficient conduction across the electrodes occurs.

  • Patent number: 4472223
Abstract: In the process of making a direct glass seal to stainless steel containing chromium, the steel having been annealed in a reducing atmosphere, a chromium-depleted layer of the surface of the steel is removed to expose core material containing sufficient chromium to produce a chromium oxide film, a chromium oxide film is formed and glass is bonded to the metal along the chromium oxide film.

  • Patent number: 4461925
Abstract: In various embodiments of improvements in a hermetic refrigeration terminal of the type shown and described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,296,275, the flange of the current conducting pin is made non-circular, the pin is necked with a circumferential groove or, in the area in which it passes through the seal, is enlarged, or both, and, when a plurality of openings is provided in the bottom wall of the cup-shaped body of the terminal, a corresponding number of insulating sleeves are joined by a common web or spider, which may be provided with a zone of weakness or may be made flexible as compared with a rigid ceramic web, for example. In still other embodiments, a pin is made up of a core structure of copper or other highly electrically conductive material and a tube, of steel or other material compatible with the seal material, that extends through the reach of the seal, the tube being hermetically secured to the core structure. The flange is either provided on the core structure itself or on the tube.

  • Patent number: 4362792
Abstract: In a conductor seal assembly, in which a conductor is sealed in place by a glass seal, a ceramic baffle plug is mounted on, and surrounds the conductor and is sealed at one end to the glass seal, preferably by fusion of the glass seal.

  • Patent number: 4308323
Abstract: A graded glass battery seal is provided wherein at least two glasses are employed, one bonded to a terminal pin, the other to the battery wall, the glasses having sufficiently different electrical/chemical properties to produce a greater resistance to chemical attack than is exhibited by either glass alone.

  • Patent number: 4296275
Abstract: In a hermetic refrigeration terminal with a cup-shaped body having a bottom wall and at least one opening in the bottom wall defined by an annular lip extending into the cup, and a current carrying pin extending through the opening and beyond the lip on both ends, and a seal bonding the pin to an inside surface of the lip, a flange is provided extending generally radially from the pin and located axially between the lip and the inner end of the pin, and an electrically insulating sleeve surrounding the pin and extending axially between the flange and the lip, the sleeve being at least in part larger in diameter than the opening and being bonded at its end opposite the flange to the seal.

  • Patent number: 4279975
Abstract: A hermetic seal closure for a battery having a case containing corrosive liquid, the case including an end wall with an aperture in it, has an axially outturned lip in the end wall defining the aperture. The lip has a generally flat, free radial surface. A washer of material substantially impervious and resistant to the corrosive liquid covers the free radial surface of the lip. The washer has an under surface projecting radially beyond the perimeter of the lip. A terminal cap of electrically conductive material has a cavity defined by an inner side wall and a central web. The inner side wall embraces the washer and projects axially beyond the washer toward the case end wall, but is spaced axially from the case end wall. Bonding material is bonded to and extends hermetically uninterruptedly through the space between the outer side wall of the lip and the inner side wall of the cap and between those side walls and the under surface of the washer, bonding the cap, washer and case to one another.
