Patent number: 6881243Abstract: A method for removing acidic gases from waste gases is disclosed. The invention relates to a method for removing acid gases, in particular from SO2 and NOx, by contacting the waste gas with an emulsion of water in organic sulfoxides, in particular of water in oil-derived-sulfoxides. The organic sulfoxide phase can be regenerated after the emulsion is loaded with polluants, by letting the emulsion to settle down and separate into two phases. The aqueous phase obtained after the separation contains sulfate and nitrate ions which can be collected and used as valuable chemicals.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2000Date of Patent: April 19, 2005Assignee: Lextran Ltd.Inventors: Adolf Khitrik, Gregori Pipko, Benjamin Doron

Patent number: 6101959Abstract: Oil shale having a relatively wide range of heating value is combusted by supplying the oil shale and a further fuel having a heating value greater than the heating value of the oil shale to a combustor. The oil shale is fed to the combustor at a substantially fixed rate, independently of the heating value of the oil shale, and the further fuel is fed to the combustor at a rate such that the heating value of the fuel in the combustor remains substantially constant in the face of variations in the heating value of the oil shale. Preferably, the temperature of combustion of the products of combustion is the parameter used to control the rate at which the further fuel is fed to the combustor.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1997Date of Patent: August 15, 2000Assignee: Ormat Industries Ltd.Inventors: Lucien Y. Patent number: 5976361Abstract: A hydrocarbon source feed is upgraded using a solvent deasphalting (SDA) unit employing a solvent having a critical temperature T.sub.c by initially separating from a first hydrocarbon input stream fractions with an atmospheric equivalent boiling temperature less than about T.sub.f .degree. F. for producing a stream of T.sub.f.sup.- fractions and a residue stream (T.sub.f.sup.+ stream), where T.sub.f is greater than about T.sub.c -50.degree. F. In the SDA unit, a second hydrocarbon input stream which includes the residue stream is deasphalted for producing a first product stream of substantially solvent-free asphaltenes, and a second product stream containing substantially solvent-free deasphalted oil (DAO). The source feed may be included in either the first or second input streams. The DAO in the second product stream is thermally cracked for producing an output stream that includes thermally cracked fractions and by-product asphaltenes produced by thermally cracking the DAO.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1997Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: Ormat Industries Ltd.Inventors: Richard L. Patent number: 5582690Abstract: Desalination of sea water is achieved using a solar pond that includes a halocline interposed between a convective upper wind mixed layer exposed to the ambient atmosphere, and a lower heat storage layer of hot, concentrated brine, Hot brine from the heat storage layer is flashed into steam which is condensed into desalted water using an indirect heat exchanger cooled by saline water. The latent heat of condensation of the steam warms the saline water and effects evaporation of water therefrom in the form of vapor. The last mentioned water vapor is condensed into desalted water using a two-stage condenser, the first stage of which is an indirect heat exchanger cooled by saline feed water which is heated as a result producing warmed saline feed water that constitutes the saline water used for condensing the steam produced by flashing the brine from the heat storage layer of the pond.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1993Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Assignee: Ormat Turbines (1965) Ltd.Inventors: Joseph Weinberger, Uriyel Fisher, Gad Assaf, Benjamin Doron
