Patent number: 7675202Abstract: A linear voice coil motor having a radially magnetized magnet structure. The voice coil motor includes an outer yoke an inner yoke magnetically coupled with and extending inside of the outer yoke. An air gap defined between the outer yoke and the inner yoke. A voice coil assembly is mounted so as to enable movement between the voice coil assembly and at least one of the yokes. In one embodiment the magnet structure is an isotropic magnet structure. In one embodiment the magnet structure is formed by a plurality of ring magnets. In one embodiment the magnet structure is formed by a plurality of isotropic ring magnets.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2007Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Inventor: Benjamin Huang

Patent number: 7566979Abstract: A power source that is powered by a user to generate electrical energy includes a generator assembly and a fluid source. The generator assembly includes a rotor, a stator, and a fluid driven motor that is coupled to the rotor. Movement of the rotor relative to the stator results in the generation of electrical energy. The fluid source is manually powered by the user to direct pressurized fluid to the fluid driven motor to move the rotor relative to the stator. The fluid source can include a first fluid pump that is powered by the user to generate the pressurized fluid and a second fluid pump that is powered by the user to generate the pressurized fluid. One or both of the fluid pumps can include a fluid bellows that is powered by the user to generate the pressurized fluid. Alternatively, one or both of the fluid pumps can include a cylinder and a piston that is moved within the cylinder by the user to generate the pressurized fluid.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2006Date of Patent: July 28, 2009Assignee: High Tide Associates, Inc.Inventors: Albert Hartman, Benjamin Huang, William Akin, John Masles, Joe Tomasic, Wendy Lorimer

Patent number: 7049708Abstract: A portable power source (10) includes a housing (12), a stator component (20), a rotor component (18), a crank assembly (14), and a control system (24). The stator component (20) is secured to the housing (12), the rotor component (18) rotates relative to the stator component (20) and the crank assembly (14) is coupled to the rotor component (18). The crank assembly (14) is rotated by the user relative to the housing (12). As provided herein, rotation of the crank assembly (14) by the user results in rotation of the rotor component (18) relative to the stator component (20). In one embodiment, the control system (24) controls the amount of torque required to rotate the crank assembly (14). For example, the amount of torque required to rotate the crank assembly (14) is varied according to the rotational position of the crank assembly (14).Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2005Date of Patent: May 23, 2006Inventors: Albert Hartman, Benjamin Huang, William Akin, Brooks Leman, John Masles, Joe Tomasic

Patent number: 5631787Abstract: In a disk drive including a conventional head and disk assembly containing a spindle motor for rotating a disk hub at a constant angular velocity and at least one rotating disk mounted to the hub, apparatus comprising a base having a peripheral sidewall surrounding the base. The base supports the head and disk assembly within an interior space defined by the peripheral sidewalls in combination with the base. To reduce the power consumption as well as the operating temperature of the disk drive by controlling and confining the air mass proximate the disk, a shroud is positioned within the interior space and proximate the disk such that the shroud substantially circumscribes the circumference of the disk for an arc of approximately 320 degrees.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1995Date of Patent: May 20, 1997Assignee: Quantum CorporationInventors: Benjamin Huang, Richard G.
