  • Patent number: 9080763
Abstract: A luminaire is provided that is configured as a window having a light guide with one or more light sources coupled to one or more edges of the light guide. Light emitted from the light guide can be used e.g., to supplement natural light passing through the window or to provide illumination when natural light is not available. Because the light source (or light sources) is incorporated into the window along one or more edges of the light guide, the light source can be either partially or totally concealed from view so as to create an appearance that can have aesthetic advantages. For example, exemplary embodiments of the present invention can have an appearance that is the same or similar to a conventional window/skylight.

  • Patent number: 9065026
Abstract: Embodiments of a lens element have a body that incorporates geometry that defines features for surfaces that receive and transmit light, e.g., from a light emitting diode (LED) device. These features include, for example, curves, bends, arcs, and like curvilinear objects and/or shapes. These embodiments employs these features to change the direction of light that transits the body. These changes can reflect, refract, and/or re-direct light, thus rendering light that emits from the lens element with one or more light distributing characteristics. In one embodiment, the body comprises a cavity with an inner surface that has a first section and a second section that curve, respectively, with positive concavity and with negative concavity relative to the LED device.

  • Publication number: 20140355264
Abstract: A lamp having a lamp base and a longitudinal axis, with a first lens with more than one segment having optic elements located distal from the lamp base. Where optic elements within a segment have similar optical properties and at least two of the segments have optic elements with different optical properties. A second lens located between the distal lens and the lamp base, the second lens having a plurality of total internal reflection (TIR) lens elements each having a focal point, with a finite light source is positioned at about each of the TIR lens element focal points. At least one of the first lens or the second lens is moveable about the longitudinal axis so as to change an alignment between the optic element segments, the TIR lens elements, and the finite light sources.

  • Patent number: 8864346
Abstract: The present subject matter is directed to a system and method for producing a batwing light distribution. A lens is illuminated with a light source, preferably an LED, and the lens is configured to internally reflect a portion of the illuminating light back in a direction generally opposite to the initial illumination direction. Another portion of the light from the light source may pass through other lens surfaces but may also be reflected back past the light source with a reflector positioned on the other side of the lens from the light source. The light source may be mounted on a frame so as to obscure light therefrom from view.

  • Publication number: 20140160762
Abstract: This disclosure contemplates embodiments of a diffuser element for use with lighting devices that utilize directional light sources, e.g., light-emitting diode (LED) devices. The embodiments utilize a shell wall that forms a volume diffuser with a non-uniform material thickness. The variations in the thickness afford the diffuser with optical characteristics that can improve the distribution of light. In one example, lighting devices that deploy the diffuser element and LED devices distribute light with an optical intensity distribution similar to an incandescent bulb.

  • Publication number: 20130201722
Abstract: The present disclosure describes embodiments of an optical system for use in a lighting device, e.g., replacements for MR/PAR/R directional lamps. In one embodiment, the optical system comprises optical elements (e.g., a lens element) with features that form light from a light source into a light beam. In one embodiment, the optical elements have a plurality of focus points, which do not all converge to a single focus point proximate the light source. Rather one or more of the focus points are spaced apart from the light source so the collective configuration of focus points causes the light beam to exhibit favorable characteristics.
