    Abstract: Provided is a method of assessing risk of developing pulmonary infection in an individual or a population comprising determining circulating leptin levels in the individuals and comparing the levels or normal controls, and if the leptin levels are higher than in the control, identifying the individual to be at risk of developing pulmonary infection. Also provided are methods of reducing the severity of, or preventing pulmonary infections in individuals with elevated leptin levels by administration of agents that that suppress the levels of leptin or interfere with its actions.
