Patent number: 7654440Abstract: An octagonal bulk bin has sidewalls, end walls and diagonal corner panels interposed between adjacent sidewalls and end walls. Major bottom flaps are foldably joined to a bottom edge of the sidewalls, minor bottom flaps are foldably joined to a bottom edge of the end walls, and diagonal bottom flaps are foldably joined to a bottom edge of the diagonal corner panels. A cut separates each major bottom flap from an adjacent diagonal bottom flap, and a web panel connects adjacent side edges of the minor bottom flaps and diagonal bottom flaps. According to one aspect of the invention, each diagonal bottom flap, web panel, and portion of an adjacent major bottom flap are crushed. According to another aspect of the invention, differently shaped notches in a free edge of the minor flaps form locking tabs that are engaged in slots near a free edge of the major flaps.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2006Date of Patent: February 2, 2010Assignee: International Paper Co.Inventors: Benjamin W. Patent number: 7549570Abstract: A container made from corrugated paperboard has more than four sides and is constructed to resist distortion when force is applied to the ends or sides of the container, and also to resist crushing when containers are stacked on top of one another. In one embodiment, the container has six sides, with two side walls, two end walls, and two diagonally opposed diagonal corner panels and two diagonally opposed square corners. In another embodiment, the container has seven sides, with two side walls, two end walls, and three diagonal corner panels and one square corner. In a further embodiment, the container has eight sides, with two side walls, two end walls, and four diagonally opposed diagonal corner panels. In this embodiment, the diagonal corner panels are oriented so that they subtend an angle of from about 35° to about 40°, and preferably 38°, with respect to the longitudinal axis of the container.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2004Date of Patent: June 23, 2009Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Benjamin W. Patent number: 7413111Abstract: A container (21) for storing and shipping produce is reinforced with at least one cross beam (20) extending across the bottom wall (26) of the container to form a bridge under loose product placed in the container to support at least a portion of the weight of the product and prevent sagging of the container bottom. The cross beam is positioned and held in place by engaging the ends of the cross beam in recesses (71) formed by crushed areas (82) on an inner surface of opposing side walls, or cut-outs (93) in the side walls, and/or by flaps (42, 43) folded upwardly from the container bottom wall and to which the cross beam is attached.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2004Date of Patent: August 19, 2008Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventors: Benjamin W. Patent number: 7036718Abstract: A container for carrying produce having dove tail locks is created from a container blank having nonsymmetrical, offset dove tail locks on the edges of the blank. When the blank is on a larger paperboard substrate having multiple blanks, the dove tail locks of a blank border the dove tail locks of an adjacent blank in a configuration that eliminates pinch points. The elimination of pinch points is achieved by having dove tail locks wherein the sides of the dove tail lock diverge from each other at different angles and for different horizontal vectors.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2003Date of Patent: May 2, 2006Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Benjamin W. Publication number: 20030047592Abstract: A container made from corrugated paperboard has a bottom wall, opposite side and end walls, and a self locking arrangement on the end walls holding the container in erected condition. The self locking arrangement includes first and second end panels on opposite ends of the side walls, and a third end panel on opposite ends of the bottom wall. The end panels form the end walls of the container. The first and second end panels have at least one notch formed in an upper edge, and a roll over flap is foldably joined by at least one web to an upper edge of each of the third end panels and is folded inwardly and downwardly over the upper edges of the first and second end panels into a locked position to hold the end panels and thus the container in erected condition. In the locked position, the web is engaged in the notch.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 25, 2002Publication date: March 13, 2003Applicant: INTERNATIONAL PAPER COMPANYInventor: Benjamin W. Quaintance

Patent number: 5752648Abstract: An eight sided poultry box formed from a unitary blank of corrugated paperboard. The lower ends of each of the four corner panels are provided with folds, the folds extending from peripheral corner portions of the box bottom towards the exterior surfaces of the corner panels. The folds function as abutments and restrict rotational movement of the corner panels about their longitudinal axes occasioned by compressive forces exerted on the box ends during shipment and handling. A first embodiment exhibits special utility as a manually erectable box, while a second embodiment is adapted to be erected by automatic machinery.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1996Date of Patent: May 19, 1998Assignee: International PaperInventor: Benjamin W. Patent number: 5520325Abstract: A combined shipping and display carton is formed from a plurality of unitary, folded paperboard blanks. The carton has an interior H shaped divider located between top and bottom panel closures, with each closure having vertically extending side and end panels or skirts. The free edges of the skirts are vertically spaced apart. The carton is in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped with a vertical post at each of the four corners. Ends of the side and end skirts of the top and bottom closures are glued to respective corner posts, leaving middle, unglued portions of the skirts. The corners of the top closure panel and the ends of the top closure panel skirts are perforated to permit tearing. After loading the carton with product, typically cylindrical containers, the top closure is glued to the posts. For opening the carton, the middle, unglued portions of the top closure are ripped upwardly, thus removing most of the top closure to thus permit side and top access to the product containers.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1995Date of Patent: May 28, 1996Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Benjamin W. Patent number: 4981253Abstract: A corrugated paperboard carton for carrying a plurality of cans such as soft drink cans. The carton is formed from a unitary blank which is folded and glued, the upper panel of the erected carton provided with precut lines to form a handle opening for the insertion of the fingers of a purchaser, one of the precut lines being in the form of a (longitudinal) half ellipse. The handle region of the carton is provided with flex lines to assist in uniform distribution of stress and thereby minimize high stress concentrations. The handle arrangement is also such that one or more of the cans in the carton assist in distributing stresses within the paperboard when the carton is carried. In a second embodiment of the invention, the handle opening is a complete, open ellipse, the narrow ends of the ellipse extending into the carton side walls. According to a third embodiment, a pair of partially elliptical flaps partially cover an elliptical handle opening and are foldable about respective elliptical fold lines.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1989Date of Patent: January 1, 1991Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Benjamin W. Patent number: 4600142Abstract: A box or container for yams or other bulk products wherein there are closure panels having lock panels at each end thereof, and which lock panels interlock in lock notches formed in end panels carried by a bottom panel of the box. The relationship between the lock panels, which includes bent elbow hooks, and the lock notches is one wherein the required locking action is easily effected and wherein the locks may be readily released for inspection. The box preferably has a three layer end wall construction including end panels carried by the bottom panel and other end panels carried by side panels of the box. The box is readily stackable and has tapered sides and vent openings so as to permit circulation between and within stacked boxes. In one modification the box is formed from a tube, the tube being formed by joining together the ends of a unitary blank to thereby form a manufacturer's joint, the blank defined by a plurality of hinged, articulated panels.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1984Date of Patent: July 15, 1986Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Benjamin W.
