In one embodiment, right isosceles triangular pieces of asphalt composition roofing material are cut. Thereafter, the material on each side of the center line bisecting the right angle is folded under the top surface of the asphalt composition material a plurality of times in a Z-fold manner along lines approximately parallel to the center line to effectively progressively thicken the material at the respective side of the center line, the folding pattern for the two sides being symmetrical with each other.

Abstract: An asphalt composition roofing starter which functions as both a starter and flashing is disclosed. The starter is preferably made from the same asphalt composition roofing material as the roof itself, and comprises a rectangular portion for nailing in plurality to the lower edge of a roof in side by side abutting relationship, and an integral downward extending flashing-like portion which may serve as the flashing on a new roof, or alternatively, covering existing metal flashing in reroofing applications, in either event being more compatible with the main roof covering itself and not requiring the usual periodic repainting characteristic of ordinary flashing. The downward extending portion of the starter is wider than the upper rectangular portion by extending beyond either one or both ends of the upper rectangular portion so as to provide an overlap to avoid any visible split or opening between the adjacent starters.

Abstract: An asphalt composition roof covering system for roofing and reroofing is comprised of a base and a plurality of tabs cut from standard rolls of asphalt composition material. The base has first, second and third regions separated by a first and second fold so as to provide a "Z" shape. The plurality of folded tabs are inserted into the third region of the base to give a three-dimensional appearance. In addition, when the system is used for reroofing over existing shake roofs, a spacer is provided along the inclined plane of a shingle to raise the base.

Abstract: Asphalt composition shingles for new roofing and reroofing which provide a three dimensional appearance not unlike shake but with the characteristic lower cost and fire retarding characteristics of asphalt composition materials. The shingles may be cut from a standard roll of asphalt composition material, and are then folded to provide regions of differing thicknesses because of the differing number of thicknesses of the material in the various regions. The shingle design allows reroofing over existing shake roofs without requiring the stripping of the old roof. Various embodiments are disclosed.
