  • Patent number: 7054635
Abstract: A method and cellular communications network is provided that improves the speech quality near a border of a cell by dynamically changing the size of the cell. More specifically, the method includes the steps of selecting a cell from a plurality of cells, and receiving a plurality of mobile reports from a corresponding number of mobile terminals located in a portion (e.g., cell border area or a section of the cell border area) of the cell. In response to receiving the plurality of mobile reports, an average speech quality value is determined for the portion of the cell. The portion is decreased in size if a lower threshold exceeds the average speech quality value or the portion is increased in size if the average speech quality measure exceeds an upper threshold.

  • Patent number: 6510321
Abstract: A method and cellular communication network are provided that maintains a desired level of speech quality by controlling the admission of a new call within a serving cell of the network. More specifically, the method includes the step of establishing speech quality values for a serving cell and at least one of a plurality of surrounding cells being interfered with by the serving cell. The method then operates to determine whether or not to admit the new call to the serving cell by utilizing the speech quality measure of the serving cell and the speech quality measure of the at least one surrounding cell in a predetermined manner (e.g., cell level approach, sub-cell approach and combined approach) so as to maintain the desired level of speech quality within the serving cell and the at least one surrounding cell.

  • Patent number: 6128473
Abstract: Downlink interference on highly uplink interfered allocated frequencies and corresponding candidate frequencies for reallocation is estimated. The estimates are then utilized to narrow the number of candidate frequencies and highly interfered frequencies to be considered for reallocation. The estimation of downlink interference on a selected frequency is made by having a mobile station measure signal strength on the control channel frequencies of neighboring cells which are allocated that selected frequency. From these measurements, a signal strength histogram is generated for each neighboring cell, and a percentile value is calculated for each histogram. These percentile values for the neighboring cells, minus a selected delta value (where appropriate), are then summed to generated a value estimating the downlink interference for the selected frequency. The selected delta value is applied where the selected frequency in the neighboring cell comprises a traffic channel frequency.
