    Abstract: A diagnostic engine for remotely analyzing a fault of a telecommunication line includes a first measurement module adapted to be coupled to a termination of the line and adapted to measure first line characteristics according to a Metallic Line Testing measurement technique; a fault detection module to detect, based upon the first line characteristics, a fault on the line and to trigger thereupon a determining module; and a showtime module to be coupled to the termination to determine whether the line is in showtime mode and to inform thereupon the determining module accordingly. In order to provide such a method and associated device that allows for detecting abnormally high crosstalk caused by high bit rate telecommunication lines running in parallel to a section of the victim telecommunication line, the method includes estimating a coupling length depending on the quiet line noise measurement data; and detecting depending on the coupling length and a physical length of the victim telecommunication line that the crosstalk is caused by the disturbing telecommunication line extending in parallel to a section of the victim telecommunication line.

    Abstract: The method and a device determine a parameter that characterizes a number of spare positions to be used for cancelling the crosstalk of lines joining a digital subscriber line vectoring group. The vectoring includes cancelling the crosstalk caused by a maximum number of lines of the vectoring group and reserving the number of spare positions. In order to provide a method and a device for determining a number of spare positions such that the vectoring group operates efficiently, the method includes determining a residual crosstalk metric that depends on a residual crosstalk between at least two subscriber lines of the vectoring group; and determining the parameter that characterizes the number of spare positions depending on the at least one residual crosstalk metric by successively modifying the parameter until the residual crosstalk metric fulfils a termination condition.
