  • Patent number: 10503521
Abstract: A computer-implemented computer shut-down method includes identifying that a computing device has been moved from an open configuration in which input and output mechanisms on the computing device are accessible to a user, to a closed configuration in which at least some of the input and output mechanisms are inaccessible to a user; starting a shut-down timer in response to identifying that the computing device has been moved from the open configuration to the closed configuration; waiting a predefined time period, as established by the shut-down timer, and determining from the shut-down timer that the computing device can be transitioned from an active state into a sleep state in which power consuming components of the computing device are powered down; and transitioning the computing device from the active state to the sleep state upon determining that the computing device can be transitioned.

  • Patent number: 10126803
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for scheduling and controlling power management activities are disclosed. An example method includes detecting, by a computing device, playback of video content at a frame rate that is greater than a predetermined threshold frame rate. The example method further includes, in response to the detection of the playback of video content at the frame rate greater than the threshold frame rate, overriding a screen dimming operation of the computing device.

  • Patent number: 9766691
Abstract: Methods for controlling power states in a computing device, and apparatus for performing such methods are disclosed. An example method includes monitoring a plurality of sensors included in a computing device. The method further includes detecting, based on the monitoring, occurrence of at least one of a change in physical orientation of the computing device and one or more changes in an ambient environment of the computing device and, responsive to a detected change, activating a controller of the computing device. The method also includes providing, from the sensors to the controller, data corresponding with the at least one of the detected changes. The method still further includes selecting, by the controller, based on the data provided by the sensors, a power state for the computing device and transitioning the computing device to the selected power state.

  • Publication number: 20080162648
Abstract: A method of expressing information contained in a communication message sent through a network from a sending party to a receiving party that includes receiving the incoming message, scanning the incoming communication message to identify pre-defined information therein, generating an operating message from the pre-defined information to control a functional component of an expressing device, and sending the operating message to the functional component. The pre-defined information is expressed by the functional component in a pre-configured mode that may include action, sound, light and images. The representation in the pre-defined information that the sending party provides in the communication message is manifested by the expressing device of the receiving party.

  • Publication number: 20050030742
Abstract: A retainer for securing a lamp having a connector. The retainer includes a pedestal having a circumference. A socket for receiving the connector is defined by the pedestal and includes a perimeter extending beyond the socket. A retainer is operably connected to the pedestal and is linearly confined between a first position and a second position. The retainer traverses the perimeter of the socket in its first position. An inhibitor capable of being secured about the circumference of the pedestal constrains the first member in its first position to impede removal of the lamp.

  • Patent number: 5586819
Abstract: A modular flashlight is formed from three parts which are screwed together--a battery housing, a switch housing, and a head. An O-ring at each screw connection provides a substantially watertight seal. A bulb is mounted in the switch housing and a reflector is mounted in the head. Rotation of the head relative to the switch housing varies the focus of the light reflected by the reflector. The head can be removed from the switch housing so that the bulb can provide candle illumination.
