Patent number: 6814310Abstract: A liquid material dispensing system provides individually metered streams of liquid material to a nozzle or die tip which dispenses the liquid material in a closely spaced arrangement. In one embodiment, the dispensing system utilizes a series of gear pumps to induce the flow of liquid material through individual dispensing modules. An adapter intermediate the modules and the die tip directs the individually controlled streams from a spacing provided by the modules to a close arrangement, such as may be suitable for coating parallel strands of substrate material.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 2002Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Assignee: Nordson CorporationInventor: Bentley J. Boger

Patent number: 5683037Abstract: Apparatus and methods for spraying an adhesive onto a substrate moving along a surface with a plurality of gun modules which are attached to individual mounting plates which in turn are secured to an adhesive and air service manifold. The gun module and movable plate assemblies can be mounted to the service manifold in a manner that enables the gun module and moveable plate assemblies to be individually shifted to a plurality of preset locations in a direction parallel to the moving surface for changing the adhesive pattern sprayed onto the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1994Date of Patent: November 4, 1997Assignee: Nordson CorporationInventors: Timothy L. Rochman, Bentley J. Boger, John M. Raterman

Patent number: 5169071Abstract: A nozzle cap, adapted for use with an adhesive dispensing device which includes a gun body and a nozzle having an adhesive passageway and an air passageway, comprising a nozzle mounting portion or nut permanently mounted to a nozzle plate formed with a stepped throughbore having an inlet with a seat which mounts an O-ring and a plurality of spaced air jet bores located radially outwardly from the throughbore and O-ring. Both the nut and nozzle plate are machined separately, and then are substantially permanently interconnected by roll-forming an end of the nut onto the peripheral edge of the nozzle plate. When the nut portion of the nozzle cap is assembled on the nozzle of the adhesive dispensing device, the nozzle plate is positioned such that its stepped throughbore communicates with the adhesive passageway in the nozzle and its air jet bores communicate with the air passageway in the nozzle.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1991Date of Patent: December 8, 1992Assignee: Nordson CorporationInventors: Bentley J. Boger, Thomas C. Jenkins

Patent number: 4874451Abstract: A method and adhesive dispensing apparatus for applying continuous, parallel rows of adhesive onto the center portion of the backing sheet of a disposable diaper and intermittent, parallel rows of adhesive on the outer portions of the backing sheet on either side of the center portion. The apparatus includes a slot nozzle, divided into two center sections and two end sections, which is formed with flow passageways for each section having a coat hanger profile including a plurality of spaced, discharge orifices to form the parallel adhesive rows. A valving arrangement including solenoid-operated center dispensing valves for each center section of the nozzle, and solenoid-operated dispensing and recirculation valve pairs for each end section of the nozzle, controls the flow of adhesive to the nozzle.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1988Date of Patent: October 17, 1989Assignee: Nordson CorporationInventors: Bentley J. Boger, Peter J. Petrecca

Patent number: 4815660Abstract: An apparatus for spraying heated hot melt adhesive in a relatively wide spray pattern comprises a manifold and at least two spray guns mounted side-by-side to the manifold. Each spray gun includes a nozzle having an adhesive discharge passageway which ejects a bead of hot melt adhesive, and a plurality of air jet bores which direct jets of pressurized air to the outer periphery of the adhesive bead to attentuate the bead forming elongated adhesive fibers and to impact a rotational motion to the fibers forming a spiral spray pattern.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1987Date of Patent: March 28, 1989Assignee: Nordson CorporationInventor: Bentley J. Boger

Patent number: 4785996Abstract: An apparatus for spraying heated hot melt adhesive in elongated strands or fibers in a controlled, spiral pattern upon a substrate comprises a spray gun having a nozzle formed with an adhesive delivery passageway and an air delivery passageway both of which terminate at the base of the nozzle. A nozzle attachment in the form of an annular plate is mounted to the base of the nozzle by an end cap. The annular plate is formed with a throughbore which receives hot melt adhesive from the adhesive delivery passageway and ejects an adhesive bead through a nozzle tip formed on the plate. An annular groove formed in the plate facilitates the drilling of air jet bores therein at an angle relative to the throughbore and adhesive bead ejected therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1987Date of Patent: November 22, 1988Assignee: Nordson CorporationInventors: Roger A. Ziecker, Bentley J. Boger, Dwayne N. Lewis

Patent number: 4687137Abstract: An adhesive dispensing apparatus for applying continuous, parallel adhesive beads onto the center portion of a substrate and intermittent, parallel adhesive beads on the outer portions of a substrate, particularly the plastic backing sheet of a disposable diaper. The apparatus includes a slot nozzle, divided into two center sections and two end sections, which is formed with flow passageways for each section having a coat hanger profile including a plurality of spaced, discharge orifices to form the parallel beads. A valving arrangement including solenoid-operated center dispensing valves for each center section of the nozzle, and solenoid-operated dispensing and recirculation valve pairs for each end section of the nozzle, controls the flow of adhesive to the nozzle.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1986Date of Patent: August 18, 1987Assignee: Nordson CorporationInventors: Bentley J.
