  • Patent number: 10621795
Abstract: A method is provided for identifying whether a vehicle has entered, departed, or stayed in a target lane as opposed to an adjacent non-target lane of a segmented roadway. Signals are received from at least one signal source at a receiver within, attached to or integrated into the vehicle marking the geographic position of the vehicle at a sampling rate in a detailed travel path. At each sampled point in the travel path, the method compares the standard perpendicular distance between: the vehicle and the target lane centerline (d1); and the vehicle and the non-target lane centerline (d2); It is assessed that the vehicle is in the target lane if the distance d1 is less than the distance d2, and otherwise, it is assessed that the vehicle is in the non-target lane.

  • Publication number: 20160209219
Abstract: A method is provided for identifying a vehicle's lane of travel amongst a set of lanes in a roadway facility. This is needed for vehicle segregation management such as for lane-specific tolling or specified vehicle access. Signals are received from one or more signal sources at a receiver within, attached to or integrated into the vehicle. Using the received signals, an approximate path of travel of the vehicle is identified and it is determined whether the vehicle's approximate path of travel crosses a geofence or virtual gantry associated with at least one boundary region of the chargeable roadway facility. If the vehicle's approximate path of travel crosses the geofence, it is determined, using distance and speed measures, and with a calculated degree of certainty, whether the measured travel path is within the targeted lane of travel.

  • Publication number: 20140236686
Abstract: A method is provided for charging a user for parking a vehicle in a chargeable parking facility. Signals are received from at least one signal source at a receiver disposed within the vehicle. Using the received signals, an approximate path of travel of the vehicle is identified and it is determined whether the vehicle's approximate path of travel crosses a geofence associated with at least one boundary region of the chargeable parking facility. If the vehicle's approximate path of travel crosses the geofence, it is determined, with a degree of certainty, whether a park point approximating a location where the vehicle has come to rest lies inside the chargeable parking facility. If the park point is determined to lie inside the chargeable parking facility, the park point is associated with a charge, and the charge is assessed to the user.

  • Patent number: 8140265
Abstract: This invention relates to a system and method to generate a private, auditable, evidentiary quality record of the location-history of an asset or person. This invention addresses ten critical improvements over existing systems that are proposed or used for metering for payment services for tolling roads, parking or pay-as-you-drive insurance, namely, cost-effective location accuracy in harsh signal environments, evidentiary assurance of location estimation, handling of dynamic and stationary positioning in a single device, high-ratio compression for a set of stationary positions in urban canyon, high-ratio compression for a dynamic tracklog in urban canyon, high-ratio compression for a set of asset motion behaviors, a method of remote device health check, including anti-tampering, removal of residual price assignment errors, anonymous use without on-board maps, and a method of deconsolidating payments to multiple payees with multiple payment regimes.

  • Publication number: 20090157566
Abstract: The invention relates to a system and a method for addressing three problems: (A) generate a tollpath of consistent length by determining one of a possible set of paths which are all the same length in cell-count every time the same journey is taken, (B) determine a consistent price for each tollpath by setting pre-determined values on those cells such that every possible path variant of a specific journey produces the same toll, and (C) determine the correct price for each tollpath by adjusting prices in each cell to account for the exact distance actually represented (some roads pass through a cell parallel to the cell edges and some pass through at an angle) so that the toll calculated exactly matches the toll that would be calculated had the exact linear, analogue distance been measured on the actual road.

  • Publication number: 20080133425
Abstract: The invention provides a method of administering a road use credit system. The method allows motorists to buy and sell road use credits. The road-use credits are redeemable for road use in a chargeable area. Motorists may be tracked by satellite using an on-board device to determine and calculate chargeable road use. A road use credit exchange is also provided.

  • Patent number: 7215255
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring, measuring, and/or usage metering of a vehicle involving tracking continuous movement and position of the vehicle for priced parking spots, priced roads, and/or pay-as-you-drive insurance. The system comprises a vehicle-mounted apparatus incorporating positioning signal reception, filtering, compression, storage and wireless transmission, while a central processing system collects these position-logs for matching with digital maps and parking, road use, and insurance fee application schedules. Sufficient accuracy and precision enables billing of vehicle owners unambiguously, generating timely congestion and traffic maps, and providing real time data feeds to signal control and navigation systems. This invention may be used to meter parking, road use, or insurance, either alone or concurrently in combination.
