  • Patent number: 5560103
Abstract: A method of making bearing including a substratum having a configured external surface to which a self-lubricating material is integrally bonded to provide a self-lubricating bearing surface, the method including; applying a layer of self-lubricating resin penetrable bearing material onto the configured external surface; providing a hardenable liquid resin to coat and penetrate the bearing material; applying an overlayment of filaments onto the layer of bearing material to exert a bonding pressure on the layer of bearing material sufficient to cause the layer of bearing material to conform and bond to the configured external surface; hardening the resin; and removing at least part of the overlayment of filaments after the resin has hardened to expose at least selected portions of the layer of self-lubricating bearing material.

  • Patent number: 5549772
Abstract: A process for making an individual thrust bearing assembly having an inner race and a filament wound outer race integrally formed on the inner race for rotation relative thereto and to resist axial thrust loads and the bearing made thereby. To perform the process a mandrel is provided. An inner race that includes an outer peripheral surface having a bearing quality finish and one or more annular inner race axial thrust resisting areas is mounted on the mandrel. The formation of the outer race is initiated by applying a hardenable thixotropic resin to the outer peripheral surface of the inner race to fill the annular inner race axial thrust resisting areas and to form outer race axial thrust resisting areas mating with the inner race axial thrust resisting areas.

  • Patent number: 5470414
Abstract: A method of making a filament wound flat stock member and the filament wound flat stock member made by that method. A low fraction bearing surface is formed on a support having a flat surface by placing a self-lubricating material on the flat surface. A matrix is formed upon the self-lubricating material by winding thereon a resin-impregnated filamentous material. The winding is continued until a desired outer matrix dimension is obtained and the resin is cured to bond the materials together into a hardened stock member. The hardened stock member is removed from the flat of the support to provide a filament wound flat stock member having an exposed bearing surface of the self-lubricating material.

  • Patent number: 5407508
Abstract: A method of producing a replaceable one piece annular outer race having an axial bore, an uninterrupted inner annular concave raceway facing into the bore and an outer surface. The method comprises the steps of applying an overlayment of filaments onto a cylindrical axially split mold assembly to form a one piece outer race substrate. The mold assembly includes first and second separable semi-cylindrical mold halves each having a semi-cylindrical convex outer mold surface, a mounting bore extending axially through the mold assembly, a removal axis normal to the mounting bore axis and a support removably mounted in the mold assembly mounting bore. A coat of hardenable liquid resin is applied to penetrate the filament overlayment substrate, after which the coated substrate is cured to form a hardened one piece outer race on the mold assembly. The cylindrical mold halves are removed from the hardened outer race to yield a single piece annular outer race.

  • Patent number: 5373637
Abstract: A process for producing a plurality of bearing members each of which has a bore defined by an inner bearing surface of self-lubricating material containing lubrication grooves that open into the bore. To perform the process a mandrel is provided having an axial length, spaced apart ends and an outer surface, and one or more rod members is affixed on the outer surface. A parting agent is applied to the mandrel outer surface and rod members and a layer of self-lubricating material is layered over the outer surface and rod members. A filament wound overlayment is applied on top of the layer of self-lubricating material along with a hardenable resin to bond the layer of self-lubricating material and overlayment together. The resin is hardened to form a rigid elongated tube member and the mandrel and rods are removed to expose the inner bearing surface and lubrication grooves. The rigid tube is then severed transversely into a plurality of individual bearing members.

  • Patent number: 4433242
Abstract: An improved system for detecting the location of a molten metal/slag interface during the casting of electroslag remelted hollows is provided. The system includes a gamma ray radiation source (30) and a scintillation counter (40). The source (30) and counter (40) reside outside the casting crucible (1) and are held in fixed spatial relationships with respect to one another and with respect to the mandrel (10). The radiation from the source (30) is directed through the crucible (1) and through the annular casting zone (9) defined between the sidewalls of the upwardly driven mandrel (10) and the crucible (1). The counter (40) provides an electrical signal responsive to the rate of radiation events detected thereby.

  • Patent number: 4282764
Abstract: A shaft is machined with helical flats or grooves. A collar or nut having a low friction inner face fits the shaft whereby their relative axial movement effects their relative rotation. The collar or nut is a short section of a longer tube which has been formed on a mandrel with corresponding outer dimensions and includes a low friction inner face and an outer thermoset resin body having a helically wound glass filament reinforcing. A minimum winding angle is required because of manufacturing considerations and strength requirements. The profile of the flats or grooves of the mandrel and of the shaft is selected relative to the winding angle of the glass filaments so that the glass filaments are not required to span any reentrant portions in either direction of winding.

  • Patent number: 4258960
Abstract: A slip sleeve liner such as for a telescoping drive line is of generally square cross-section. A low-friction material forms the inner face. The body of the liner is of a cured epoxy resin reinforced with circumferential glass filaments. These glass filaments extend uniquely around the corner to provide the reinforcement of the resin which is required to prevent its failure under the strains resulting from the torque loading.

  • Patent number: 4189985
Abstract: A woven seamless sleeve including axial yarns forms the inner face of an epoxy resin cylinder for an air operated linear actuator. Under certain conditions, a minute, internal, spiral groove develops in applying the resin. In the operation of the actuator the groove serves to retain lubricant.

  • Patent number: 3938184
Abstract: A digital flutter reduction system which corrects for a varying time base ror in FM recordings on magnetic tape. Pulse transitions from the outputs of a reference oscillator and a reference tone on a first tape track are compared by a flip-flop whose output is a pulse having a width corresponding to the time base error. The output pulse enables a first counter to provide a digital output which is loaded into a second counter. Pulse transitions from a second tape track containing recorded data advance the second counter over a number of counts indicative of a correction factor. The pulse transitions of the recorded data are delayed in accordance with the correction factor thereby reducing the time base error.
