  • Patent number: 5912174
Abstract: Methods of stabilizing lymphocytes and/or stem cells obtained from a mammal by suspending them in an aqueous medium comprising gelatin.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 20, 1995
Date of Patent: June 15, 1999
Inventors: David Scheer, Bernard M. Babior
  • Patent number: 5908611
Abstract: The present invention relates to therapeutic methods for treating diseases characterized by an accumulation of high molecular weight DNA in mucous, thereby contributing to the viscosity of the mucous. Such diseases include cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchitis. Treatment includes administration of weak organic acids to promote acidification of cells and consequently apoptosis-induced DNA fragmentation. The invention also relates to therapeutic apparatus for administering the acid compositions.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 5, 1995
Date of Patent: June 1, 1999
    Assignee: The Scripps Research Institute
Inventors: Roberta A. Gottlieb, Bernard M. Babior
  • Patent number: 5369001
Abstract: A aqueous stock solution for preserving human cells, particularly leukocytes, which includes 20-40% modified gelatin by weight in a physiologically acceptable buffer at pH4-7.5.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 28, 1992
Date of Patent: November 29, 1994
    Inventor: Bernard M. Babior
  • Patent number: 5211960
Abstract: Preservation of leukocytes by suspending in storage medium containing modified fluid gelatin, plasma, and a non-toxic buffer. Preferred additives include heterocyclic bases which occur in nucleic acids, or nucleosides or nucleotides containing the same.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 15, 1989
Date of Patent: May 18, 1993
Assignee: Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation
    Inventor: Bernard M. Babior
  • Patent number: 4923797
Abstract: Preservation of leukocytes by suspending in storage medium containing modified fluid gelatin, plasma, and a non-toxic buffer. Preferred additives include heterocyclic bases which occur in nucleic acids, or nucleosides or nucleotides containing the same.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 29, 1988
Date of Patent: May 8, 1990
Assignee: President & Fellows of Harvard College
    Inventor: Bernard M. Babior
  • Patent number: 4639373
Abstract: Granulocytes are effectively preserved during storage for long periods of time without freezing by using as the storage medium a non-toxic buffer containing both gelatin and plasma.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 24, 1985
Date of Patent: January 27, 1987
Assignee: New England Medical Center Hospitals, Inc.
    Inventor: Bernard M. Babior
  • Patent number: 4471051
Abstract: Neutrophils and platelets from human blood are stabilized for storage and subsequent reconstitution for use by reacting with a chemical cross-linking agent having functional groups reactive to form covalent linkages with the neutrophils or platelets, the functional groups being covalently bonded to a molecular backbone including a group subject to cleavage under conditions which are non-destructive of the neutrophils or platelets. After storage at reduced temperature, the composition can be reconstituted by cleavage and substantially regains its original physiological properties.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 13, 1983
Date of Patent: September 11, 1984
Assignee: New England Medical Center Hospitals, Inc.
Inventors: Bernard M. Babior, Irena I. Aviram
