Abstract: An apparatus and method for punching a hole in the end of a battery terminal bushing having a head at one end, a frustum at the other end and a spline ring intermediate the head and the frustum, the bushing including a tapered recess and terminating at a blank wall or disc at the end of the frustum, the apparatus including a base having a plate mounted with a number of openings equally spaced around the perimeter thereof, the plate being mounted on the base for rotary motion with respect to a punch assembly aligned with the path of motion of the opening, the punch assembly including a punch for removing the blank disc at the end of the frustum, and passing the punch through the tapered recess in the bushing and the opening in the plate.

Abstract: A cold formed side wall terminal for a storage battery, the terminal being formed from a lead slug having a cavity at one end, a stainless steel nut positioned in the cavity and encapsulated therein on cold working the lead slug, the terminal further including a spline ring at the other end and a number of seal rings formed on the outside of the terminal intermediate the ends thereof.

Abstract: A vent plug for use in batteries, such as lead acid batteries. The vent plug is provided with a flame arresting vent passage portion defined by a plurality of elongated small cross section flow passages. The vent plug is adapted for low cost manufacture as by injection molding of separate parts thereof in accurate dimensional coordination. The flame arrestor passages, in the illustrated embodiment, are formed by projecting portions on one of the plug elements extending into fitted engagement with the other of the elements.

Abstract: A battery container made of molded plastic and preferably formed in a single unitary structure. The container comprises a generally rectangular hollow container with a plurality of internal partitions formed as integral parts of the container bottom and side walls dividing the interior space into a plurality of battery cells. A plurality of ribs are formed on the mold surface that forms the bottom of the container, the ribs being in alignment with the cavities between adjacent mold cores and forming a plurality of parallel grooves in the lower surface of the container bottom. The ribs are at least as wide as the width of the cavities between adjacent cores at the top of the container so that the upper ends of the partitions formed in said cavities fit into the resulting grooves formed by the ribs when the containers are stacked on top of each other.

Abstract: A battery container made of molded plastic and preferably formed in a single unitary structure. A plurality of internal partitions formed as integral parts of the container bottom and side walls divide the interior space into a plurality of battery cells. These partitions are formed by a plurality of spaced mold cores disposed within the mold that forms the outside shell of the container. A plurality of ribs are formed on the mold surface that forms the bottom of the container, the ribs being in alignment with the cavities between adjacent mold cores and forming a plurality of parllel grooves in the lower surface of the container bottom.
