Patent number: 8281315Abstract: Exemplary embodiments include a system and storage medium for managing computer processing functions in a multi-processor computer environment. The system includes a physical processor, a standard logical processor, an assist logical processor sharing a same logical partition as the standard logical processor, and a single operating system instance associated with the logical partition, the single operating system instance including a switch-to service and a switch-from service. The system also includes a dispatch component managed by the single operating system instance. Upon invoking the switch-to service by standard code, the switch-to service checks to see if an assist logical processor is online and, if so, it updates an integrated assist field of a work element block associated with the task for indicating the task is eligible to be executed on the assist logical processor. The switch-to service also assigns a work queue to the work element block.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2008Date of Patent: October 2, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Donald F. Ault, Jose R. Castano, Jeffrey P. Kubala, Robert J. Maddison, Bernard R. Pierce, Gary S. Puchkoff, Peter J. Relson, Robert R. Rogers, Donald W. Schmidt, Leslie W. Wyman

Patent number: 8108877Abstract: A system for distributing a plurality of tasks over a plurality of nodes in a network includes: a plurality of processors for executing tasks; a plurality of nodes comprising processors; a task dispatcher; and a load balancer. The task dispatcher receives as input the plurality of tasks; calculates a task processor consumption value for the tasks; calculates a node processor consumption value for the nodes; calculates a target node processor consumption value for the nodes; and then calculates a load index value as a difference between the calculated node processor consumption for a node i and the target node processor consumption value for the node i. The balancer distributes the tasks among the nodes to balance the processor workload among the nodes according to the calculated load index value of each node, such that the calculated load index value of each node is substantially zero.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2008Date of Patent: January 31, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Donna N. Patent number: 7657889Abstract: A method of searching for work elements for processing in a computing system having a primary queue of work elements and at least one secondary queue of work elements. A numerical priority value is associated with each of the work elements. The method includes setting an initial priority bar and processing work elements from the primary queue until reaching a work element having a priority less than the initial priority bar. A priority bar is set equal to a minimum of a priority limit and a priority on the at least one secondary queue. If the primary queue contains a work element having a priority greater than or equal to the priority bar, then the work element is processed. If the primary queue contains a work element having a priority less than the priority bar, then a work element from the at least one secondary queue is processed.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2004Date of Patent: February 2, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Bernard R. Patent number: 7392524Abstract: Exemplary embodiments include a method, system, and storage medium for managing computer processing functions in a multi-processor computer environment that includes a standard logical processor and an assist logical processor, each of which share the same operating system instance within a logical partition. The method includes invoking a switch-to service by standard code. The standard code is running on a standard logical processor and is executing a task. The switch-to service checks to see if an assist logical processor is online, and it if finds one, the switch-to service updates an integrated assist field of a work element block associated with the task and assigns a queue to the work element block. The task is dispatched, in accordance with business rules identified in a system control block, on either of said assist logical processor or said standard logical processor.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2004Date of Patent: June 24, 2008Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Donald F. Patent number: 5537542Abstract: A workload manager creates an in storage representation of a set of performance goals, each goal associated with a class of clients (e.g., client transactions) in a client/server data processing system. A set of servers, providing service to the clients, are managed to bring the clients into conformity with the class performance goals by: calculating performance indexes for each class to determine the target class(es) which are farthest behind their class performance goals; analyzing the relationship among servers and client classes to determine which servers serve which classes; determining which resource(s) are impacting the service provided to the key servers (that is, those on which the target class(es) are most heavily reliant), and projecting the effect of making more of these resources available to those servers; and, finally, making the changes to those resources which are projected to most favorably indirectly affect the performance of the target class(es).Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1994Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Catherine K. Eilert, Bernard R. Pierce

Patent number: 5473773Abstract: A workload manager creates goal control data, defining two or more classes of system work units, in response to specification of goals of two or more goal types for the classes, and specification of importance values for each of the goal types. A system resource manager causes the goals to be met by periodically sampling work unit status; calculating a performance index for each class; selecting a receiver class to receive improved service based on the relative performance indexes and goal importance; a system bottleneck impacting achievement of goal by the receiver class is identified; and one or more system control data elements are identified and adjusted to cause the goal to be met for the receiver class.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1994Date of Patent: December 5, 1995Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Jeffrey D. Aman, Catherine K. Eilert, Gary M. King, Bernard R. Pierce, Peter B. Yocom

Patent number: 5247687Abstract: Paging data is used to manage address space working set size, system multiprogramming level, and job mix, to improve system productive CPU utilization. System paging characteristics are monitored to determine when to perform management functions. When needed, address space paging data is collected for monitored address spaces, and target working set sizes set for managed address spaces. If necessary, address spaces are "forced" to exhibit characteristic paging patterns. Reallocation of working set pages among active address spaces, and swap in-swap out actions, are assessed, and impacts on productive CPU utilization is estimated.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1990Date of Patent: September 21, 1993Assignee: International Business Machines Corp.Inventors: Catherine K. Eilert, Bernard R. Pierce

Patent number: 4807111Abstract: This disclosure shortens a dispatching queue by deleting those queue elements having all task blocks in a wait state. The queue has no serializing lock, so that it may be used in parallel by simultaneous requestors in a multiprocessing environment. Whenever any new or deleted element acquires a dispatchable block, a dispatchability indicator is entered for the element; and if the element is off the queue, it is then inserted into the queue in a priority order of elements in the queue. Coordinated communication is provided for all other requestors that may simultaneous access any element (whether on or off the queue) by providing special flag fields for each element that indicate: the changeable/nonchangeable state of the pointer to the next element in the queue, whether the element is on or off the queue, and an identifier of the current requestor accessing the element to possibly insert or delete the element.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1987Date of Patent: February 21, 1989Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Edward I.
