Abstract: A freeze safe valve has a valve body, a valve gate, a washer, a fastener having an interior channel, and a plug placed in the channel of the fastener. With fluid pressure in the normal downstream direction, the plug will be held in place, and the valve will function as a standard valve. However, when net pressure exists in the upstream direction at a certain predetermined level due to, for example, the formation of ice on the downstream side of the valve, the plug will become dislodged so that fluid may flow back to the upstream side. This will alleviate the pressure on the downstream side and ideally will preclude breakage of the downstream pipe or the valve itself.
