Patent number: 7131932Abstract: A method for determining a transmittable torque of a clutch of an automatic transmission of a motor vehicle, in particular an automated shift transmission, uses the clutch for transmitting torque from an engine shaft to a transmission input shaft and uses a synchronizing device for selectively engaging and disengaging a gear stage in the automatic transmission. The gear stage is pre-synchronized with the synchronizing device by applying a given synchronizing force to the synchronizing device but without engaging the gear stage. Speeds of the engine shaft and of the transmission input shaft are measured. The torque transmitted by the clutch is determined by comparing the speeds of the engine shaft and of the transmission input shaft while taking into account a current synchronizing force.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2005Date of Patent: November 7, 2006Assignee: Volkswagen AktiengesellschaftInventors: Jörg Fähland, Bernd Cappelmann, Rainer Hofmann

Patent number: 5950781Abstract: A twin-clutch transmission having the driving gear wheels of adjacent gears on different transmission input shafts permits skipping one gear stage while shifting gears, i.e. shifting between gears whose driving gear wheels are on the same transmission input shaft, by using an auxiliary gear on the other transmission input shaft to supply a filler torque while shifting between the initial gear and a selected gear.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1998Date of Patent: September 14, 1999Assignee: Volkswagen AGInventors: Panagiotis Adamis, Bernd Cappelmann, Reinhold Haack, Harald Ludanek, Ansgar Damm

Patent number: 5890392Abstract: A twin-clutch transmission has first and second transmission input shafts and a transmission output shaft, each input shaft having an associated friction clutch. In the initial state, the first clutch transmits engine torque in a state of static friction and the second clutch is open. In a shifting operation the second transmission input shaft is brought to a synchronous speed, thus permitting the engagement of a selected gear. In order to prevent a condition in which both clutches are in static friction engagement, which would result in locking up of the transmission, the speed of at least one clutch is maintained in the range of sliding friction to a value in the vicinity of the synchronization speed until the torque to be transmitted has been transferred steadily from the first clutch to the second clutch. A synchronizer is used when shifting up in the overrun condition.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1997Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: Volkswagen AGInventors: Harald Ludanek, Reinhold Haack, Bernd Cappelmann
