  • Patent number: 10062399
Abstract: Some embodiments are directed to tape drive systems that oscillate the relative transverse position of the tape and magnetic head during seek operations (for example, by moving the head in the transverse direction). Some embodiments are directed to tape drive systems that select relative transverse position of the tape and magnetic head to counter uneven wear (for example, observed uneven wear, uneven wear predicted based on historical tape and drive usage data).

  • Patent number: 10048891
Abstract: Transferring data from a first data storage cartridge of a first data storage library to a second data storage library. The first library includes a first data storage drive, the second library includes a second data storage drive. If the first and second libraries are not connected by a mechanical pass-through, mounting the first data storage cartridge into the first data storage drive. A network connection between the first and second data storage drives, with both data storage drives operating in a data transfer mode, is initiated. Mounting a second data storage cartridge into the second data storage drive. Copying the data of the first data storage cartridge onto the second data storage cartridge via the network connection, and deleting the data of the first data storage cartridge. Else, transporting the data cartridge from the first library to the second library via the mechanical pass-through.

  • Patent number: 10014017
Abstract: A tape drive system with a transducer (for example, a magnetic head arrays/separation shield) located in a recess of a transducer housing (for example, supporting rails, a U-shaped carbon tape guide). During seek operations and/or data access operations (that is, read/write operations), the transducer and the transducer housing are moved, in the transverse direction relative to the direction of elongation of the tape, independently of each other. The motion of the transducer housing (for example, back and forth oscillatory movement in the transverse direction) is controlled to even out wear across the tape-facing surface of the transducer housing. Some embodiments accomplish this by using separate motors to transversely move the transducer and the transducer housing.

  • Patent number: 9824720
Abstract: An apparatus includes a tape cartridge housing, an RFID chip attached to the tape cartridge housing. The RFID chip includes a tape cartridge ID and tape cartridge information, a time relay operably connected to the RFID chip, and external contact points configured to contact another RFID chip of another tape cartridge within the same tier. A method includes receiving a tape cartridge label read request including a position indicator corresponding to a location of a tape cartridge of interest, moving a tape cartridge gripper to the location indicated by the position indicator, activating a field coil on the tape cartridge gripper to provide power to an RFID chip on a selected tape cartridge, detecting information transmitted by the RFID chip on the selected tape cartridge, determining if the selected tape cartridge is the tape cartridge of interest, and activating a next RFID chip on an adjacent tape cartridge.

  • Publication number: 20170126780
Abstract: Transferring data from a first data storage drive of a first data storage library to a first computer system that is connected to a second data storage drive of a second data storage library. A data transfer request for transferring data accessible by the first data storage drive to the first computer system is received. A network connection is initiated between the first and the second data storage drive. An access to the requested data is initiated by the first data storage drive. A transfer of the requested data from the first to the second data storage drive via the network connection is initiated. A transfer of the requested data from the second data storage drive to the first computer system is initiated.

  • Patent number: 9208818
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention disclose methods, computer program products, and systems for replicating data stored on a tape cartridge on one or more computing devices. In one embodiment, initiation of a replication sequence begins in response to at least one of: receiving a manual prompt of a user, loading of a first tape cartridge to be replicated into a first tape drive, receiving a request from a backup program, or occurrence of a predetermined time. When priming a first tape cartridge for writing of data, the first tape cartridge is configured for replication to a second tape cartridge. After loading the first tape cartridge into a first tape drive, data stored on the first tape cartridge can be directly transmitted from the first tape drive to a second tape drive in which the second tape cartridge is loaded without using an intermediate host computer system to facilitate data transfer.

  • Patent number: 5857912
Abstract: The subject matter of the invention is a system allowing play on several games machines, in particular coin-operated machines, set up remotely from each other. The system comprises at least two games machines (2A, 2B) set up in different locations (A, B) and connected by a bi-directional connecting line (14). The games machines (2A, 2B) each have a target face (62) where the darts land and a device for detecting and displaying the position of a "hit" on the target face. The system also includes computers (6A, 6B) for processing, evaluating and transmitting data. A number of transmitter and receiver units are mounted outside the target face (62); their connecting paths across the target face (62, 70) form a raster and are intersected by darts landing on the target face. The raster is provided with co-ordinates, and data on the co-ordinate values of points at which the darts strike can be transmitted to another games machine for hit location and display.
