  • Patent number: 6656983
Abstract: The invention provides mixed aromatic vinyl-1,3-diene polymers stabilized by a protective colloid and present in the form of aqueous polymer dispersions or polymer powders redispersible in water as adhesives for porous substrates. The polymer dispersions and the polymer powders are obtained by emulsion polymerization of a mixture containing: a) 20 to 80 percent by weight of one or more vinylaromatics; b) 19.9 to 79.9 percent by weight of one or more 1,3-dienes; c) 0.1 to 15 percent by weight of one or more comonomers from the group consisting of N-methylolacrylamide, N-methylolmethacrylamide and the N-(alkoxymethyl)-acrylamides and N-(alkoxymethyl)-methacrylamides with a C1 to C6-alkyl radical. The sum of the above percentages adds up to 100% by weight. Emulsion polymerization is carried out in the presence of one or more protective colloids and without emulsifiers, optionally followed by drying of the resulting aqueous polymer dispersion.

  • Patent number: 6489391
Abstract: The invention provides a method of producing aqueous, protective colloid stabilized vinyl ester homo- and co-polymer dispersions with a defined solids content by emulsion polymerization in the presence of a protective colloid. The method specifies that a dispersion with a solids content lower than the defined solids content is produced and then thickened to the defined solids content after the polymerization has been completed. The dispersion is thickened by adding a polymer powder which is of the same polymer composition as the emulsion polymerizate and which can be redispersed in water.

  • Patent number: 4997870
Abstract: A process is provided for the preparation of polyvinyl alcohols absorbed onto pigments. In the process 10% to 30% strength by weight of aqueous solutions of partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohols or fully or partially hydrolyzed vinyl alcohol copolymers, which are soluble in cold water, are spray-dried after the addition of 20% to 40% by weight, relative to the total solids content of the resulting suspension, of organic or inorganic pigments, preferably chalk. The invention is also directed to the pulverulent product and its use, wherein the product is distinguished by good flow capacity and an extremely low methanol content. It is suitable for use as a binder in paper coating compositions and in coatings for the surface finishing of paper and cardboard.

  • Patent number: 4959249
Abstract: Binders for strengthening textile fiber structures and based on aqueous, self-crosslinking vinyl ester dispersions having a reduced formaldehyde content or containing no formaldehyde. The low content of free formaldehyde in the dispersion is achieved by partial or complete substitution of the crosslinking comonomers containing N-methylol groups by vinylalkoxysilanes as crosslinking agents. Non-woven treated with these formaldehyde-free or low formaldehyde binder systems are distinguished by high strength values and excellent solvent resistance.

  • Patent number: 4585863
Abstract: An improved process for the manufacture of 2-isopropyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine, starting from 3-aminocrotonic acid amide and an acylating agent, without isolating the intermediately formed 3-isobutyrylaminocrotonic acid amide. In a first process step, the acylation is carried out with excess isobutyric acid anhydride in the presence of an alkali metal salt of isobutyric acid at temperatures of from 50.degree. to 120.degree. C. and in the absence of a solvent. In a second process step, the cyclization is carried out in the resulting reaction mixture by the addition of an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution at temperatures of from 80.degree. to 105.degree. C., and then the hydroxypyrimidine is isolated in known manner. The total quantities of alkali metal hydroxide added in the second process step are such that they are sufficient both for the neutralization of the isobutyric acid present in the reaction mixture and also for the cyclization.

  • Patent number: 4323678
Abstract: The invention provides an improved process for the manufacture of the insecticide diazinon. The process uses .beta.-isobutyrylaminocrotonic acid amide as starting material and, by reaction with sodium hydroxide solution or alcoholate and phosphorylation with diethylthiophosphoryl chloride, diazinon (0,0-diethyl-0-(2-isopropyl-4-methyl-6-pyrimidinyl)thiono -phosphate) is obtained directly in a high yield without isolating any intermediates.

  • Patent number: 4242276
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of .beta.-isobutyrylaminocrotonic acid amide by reacting .beta.-aminocrotonic acid amide with dimethylketene in the liquid or gaseous state without the application of external heat at temperatures in the range of from room temperature to 70.degree. C. The dispersion medium used is an organic solvent having a boiling point above 40.degree. C. that may contain up to 0.1 mole of water and 0.2 to 2 moles of a carboxylic acid having 1 to 4 carbon atoms per mole of .beta.-aminocrotonic acid amide. If the dimethylketene is added undiluted the reaction is carried out in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of a protective gas atmosphere. The .beta.-isobutyrylaminocrotonic acid amide is obtained in the form of two stereoisomers (Z- and E-forms), which differ as regards their melting point and their solubility in organic solvents. On heating to 40.degree. C., the E-form is converted into the Z-form.
