Abstract: The present invention describes a novel baculovirus protein expression system in insect cells, where the expression of recombinant protein(s) is inducible. By the inducible expression systems of the invention, expression of the recombinant protein of interest can be repressed during virus amplification, and thereafter activated in the presence or absence, respectively, of an inducing molecule or by a change in environmental conditions. The novel expression system does not produce significant levels of recombinant protein by baculovirus-infected cells during virus amplification prior to induction, thereby reducing selection pressure on the expression cassette for the recombinant protein. When induction is initiated, an increased yield of recombinant protein is thus produced relative to presently available, non-inducible baculovirus expression methods.
