Patent number: 7059668Abstract: A wind deflector is presented for use at the leading end of a roof opening in a roof of a vehicle, which wind deflector at least comprises a transversally extending longitudinal main body with a forward side extending upwardly and rearwardly. The main body over at least part of its transverse length is provided with an opening in its lower section, which opening defines the access to a chamber of which a substantially upwardly directed wall is constructed in such a manner that an air stream entering said chamber through the access opening in the main body of the wind deflector is slowed down in said chamber and leaves said chamber through said upwardly directed wall only in a limited amount and with reduced velocity compared to the initial air stream velocity.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2004Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: Inalfa Roof Systems Group B.V.Inventors: Erik Van De Putten, Bernd Wilms

Patent number: 6942283Abstract: An open roof construction for a vehicle having a roof opening in its fixed roof, includes a frame having longitudinal guide sections, and a closure moveable by a closure operating mechanism between a closed position and an open position in which the closure is slid under the fixed roof. A drain channel is positioned under the rear edge of the roof opening at least in a closed position of the closure and is movable with a drain channel operating mechanism, which is capable of moving the drain channel in the opening direction of the closure. The drain channel operating mechanism is adapted so as to cause a relative movement between the drain channel and the closure. The relative movement may be used to move the drain channel such that the drain channel occupies less space when the closure is at its fully opened position, which leads to a saving of space within the frame.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2004Date of Patent: September 13, 2005Assignee: Inalfa Roof Systems Group B.V.Inventor: Bernd Wilms

Publication number: 20050140164Abstract: A vehicle has a roof assembly (4) opening an opening (17) in the vehicle roof which includes at least a rear cross beam (12). The roof assembly comprises at least one closure element (8,9,10) which is at least one closure element (8,9,10) which is at least movable between a closed position for closing the roof opening, and an open, rearwardly displaced position, in which the roof opening is at least partially released. The rear cross beam (12) is connected to pivotable arms (13) which are at least pivotally attached to the body (1). The at least one closure element (8,9,10), when in the open position, forms a unit (15) with said rear cross beam (12). The unit (15) is pivotable by means of said arms (13) between an operative position at the roof and an inoperative position in the trunk (3) of the vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 11, 2003Publication date: June 30, 2005Inventors: Bernd Wilms, Pascal Josef Feijts

Patent number: 6494441Abstract: A self-pumping hydropneumatic spring strut with internal leveling for motor vehicles includes a working cylinder filled with damping medium. The working cylinder is under the pressure of at least one gas cushion arranged in a high-pressure chamber and acting as a spring. A piston divides the working cylinder into two working spaces and is connected to a hollow piston rod. Valves are arranged on the piston so that the two working spaces are in communiction through the valves. A piston pump is driven by the spring movements and pumps oil out of a low-pressure chamber into the working space connected to the high-pressure chamber and comprises a pump space formed by the hollow piston rod, a pump rod connected to the working cylinder. A further pressure generator acts upon the damping medium in the high-pressure chamber and/or the working space connected to the high-pressure space.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1999Date of Patent: December 17, 2002Assignee: Mannesman Sachs AGInventors: Hubert Beck, Bernd Wilms, Holger Kirchner

Patent number: 6227605Abstract: An operating system is used for hydraulic convertible top locking systems in retractable roof convertibles. A control unit has a control piston which is loaded in one axial direction by the hydraulic driving unit and in the opposite axial direction by a mechanical pressure spring arrangement. The control piston is restrictedly guided in the circumferential and axial direction in a housing by a control contour.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1999Date of Patent: May 8, 2001Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventors: Dirk Weisser, Bernd Wilms

Patent number: 6202993Abstract: Self-pumping hydropneumatic shock strut with internal level regulation for motor vehicles with a work cylinder which is filled with oil and acted upon by pressure by at least one gas cushion arranged in a high-pressure chamber which acts as a spring. The work cylinder is divided into two work spaces by a work piston carried by a hollow piston rod. The work piston has a piston pump which is driven by the spring movements and delivers oil from a low-pressure chamber in the work space connected with the high-pressure chamber. The pump cylinder of the piston pump is formed by the hollow piston rod. A hollow pump rod which is fastened to the work cylinder and carries a suction valve at its front end penetrates into the piston rod and the bore of the hollow pump rod is connected with the low-pressure chamber.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1998Date of Patent: March 20, 2001Assignee: Mannesmann Sachs AGInventors: Bernd Wilms, Holger Kirchner, Achim Meier

Patent number: 5338085Abstract: The invention relates to a folding top for motor vehicles, having a top frame which comprises lateral top supports and a rear hoop. The top has a storage position of the top in an associated top box, into which it can be lowered by folding back the upright top supports about a main axis. The top frame has an articulation, spaced relative to the main axis, of the lateral legs of the rear hoop on the frame members which are jointly moved via the top supports, whereby the rear hoop is displaced backwards relative to the main axis during the lowering process, and having a rearward widening of the top box behind the top box aperture into which the rear hoop projects when the top is lowered.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1993Date of Patent: August 16, 1994Assignee: Mercedes-Benz AGInventors: Martin Guckel, Jurgen Schrader, Bernd Wilms
