  • Patent number: 6379608
Abstract: In a method for closing and opening a tapping hole of a metallurgical vessel, in which method a closure body (4), which leaves clear an annular gap between the closure body (4) and the wall of the tapping hole, can be moved out of a waiting position (I) into a closure position (II), in which it covers the tapping hole, and back, and in which method, at least in the closure position (II), a pressurized gas is introduced into the tapping hole counter to the outflow direction of a molten material contained in the metallurgical vessel, in order to avoid skull formation, the closure body (4) is moved out of the waiting position (I) into the closure position (II) and back with directions of movement which lie in different areas.

  • Patent number: 6228320
Abstract: A converter is provided having a converter vessel carried on a trunnion ring by a mounting system. The mounting system has six mounting elements including a plurality of mounting elements incorporating pendulum rods and one mounting element incorporating a stabilizer device. Each pendulum rod is connected at one end to the trunnion ring and at the other end to the converter vessel. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the mounting system includes three longitudinal mounting devices each having a longitudinal pendulum rod; two transverse mounting devices each having a transverse pendulum rod; and a stabilizer device having a pair of spaced stabilizer blocks connected to the trunnion ring and a pair of stabilizer elements connected to the converter vessel. The longitudinal mounting devices and the stabilizer device are located below the trunnion ring and the transverse mounting devices are located above the trunnion ring when the converter vessel is in an upright position.

  • Patent number: 5653936
Abstract: In a method of cooling a hot surface, a liquid cooling medium is atomized by a plurality of nozzles in a hollow space surrounding the surface and open towards the atmosphere. In order to ensure uniform continuous, yet just sufficient, cooling of the hot surface, with the cooling effecting with a constant temperature as possible over an extended period of time while avoiding changing thermal expansions of the hot surface, the liquid cooling medium is continuously atomized by means of unary nozzles to a fine mist having a droplet size ranging between 4 and 60 .mu.m. The mist leaves the unary nozzles at a low speed and is moved along the hot surface within the hollow space surrounding the hot surface under utilization of the natural thermal current in the hollow space.

  • Patent number: 4678168
Abstract: A tilting channel for guiding molten material includes a trough-shaped channel body provided with outlets at opposite ends thereof and a spot of impact for the jet of molten material between said outlets. The channel body is pivotable by means of a pivot drive about a tilting axle from a normal operation position into an emergency operation position, and vice versa. The channel body is formed by two channel parts enclosing an angle O<.phi.<180.degree., and the bottom of the first channel part is arranged at a lower level relative to the bottom of the second channel part. The spot of impact of the jet is located on the first channel part close to where the latter enters into the second channel part, and the vertical middle plane of the first channel part lies in the plane formed by the jet, when the first channel part is in its downwardly inclined normal operating position.

  • Patent number: 4678419
Abstract: An arrangement for the production of vitrified slag includes a rotating cooling drum provided with an internal cooling and on whose surface molten-slag-receiving recesses are provided. The site of impact of the slag is approximately at the uppermost point of the cooling drum. In order to ensure the vitrification of the slag with the flowing of molten slag off the cooling drum being reliably prevented, and an economic production of solidified slag being ensured, the recesses are separated by webs in the circumferential direction of the cooling drum and in the end region of the cooling drum are designed to be closed in the axial direction thereof. A plurality of cooled counter rolls contacting the webs by their surfaces and aligned with their axes parallel to the cooling drum are provided. They are arranged after the site of impact of the slag in the rotation direction of the cooling drum and one behind the other in its circumferential direction.

  • Patent number: 4572281
Abstract: To recover the sensible heat of slag the slag is allowed to solidify on the surface of a hollow cooling body provided with a liquid internal cooling and is indirectly cooled by the liquid internal cooling. The liquid cooling medium of the liquid internal cooling is guided in a thermodynamic cyclic process. In order to ensure as completely a recovery of the sensible heat of the slag as possible and a high percentage of glassy portions of the slag as well as a good grindability of the slag, the liquid slag on the surface of the cooling body is intensively cooled indirectly by the liquid cooling medium to a temperature of closely below the solidification temperature in a first cooling step. The solidified slag separated from the surface of the cooling body is then directly cooled by a gas flow in a second cooling step. The heated gas flow also is guided in a thermodynamic cyclic process.

  • Patent number: 4561883
Abstract: In a method of producing metals or metal alloys by reducing their halides in a hydrogen plasma, a plasma jet reaction zone is built up from the vaporized metal halides contained in the plasma gas together with hydrogen, and the molten metal formed jets from the plasma jet reaction zone into a mould arranged therebelow. An arrangement for carrying out this method includes a reaction vessel whose upper part has a reaction space for the metal halide to be reduced and hydrogen-containing plasma gas, and a plasma lance arranged centrally in the reaction vessel, the metal formed getting into the lower part of the reaction vessel forming a metal sump therein.

  • Patent number: 4281823
Abstract: In a tiltable converter arrangement with a carrying ring surrounding the converter vessel at a distance and having two carrying trunnions, the converter vessel is movably connected with the carrying ring by articulately connected brackets. The converter vessel is mounted in the carrying ring by means of three of these brackets that are inclined towards the longitudinal axis of the converter vessel and whose joints are each mounted to the converter vessel and to the carrying ring. The three brackets are pivotable in the plane laid through their longitudinal or central axes and the longitudinal axis of the converter vessel, which plane is at a right angle to the axis of the carrying trunnions.
