  • Patent number: 6599395
Abstract: A method of producing paper webs coated on both sides includes the following steps: a) indirectly applying a liquid onto the paper web by passing the web through at least one nip formed by a roll and a counterelement, whereafter the web is dried; b) next, directly applying coating mixture at surplus only on one side of the web, whereafter the surplus coating mixture is removed again by use of a doctor element, the web being dried again thereafter; and c) lastly, directly applying coating mixture at surplus only on the other web side, whereafter the surplus coating mixture is removed by use of a doctor, whereafter the web is dried again. In the indirect application of liquid in the nip, or in the nips, either coating mixture to produce so-called MWC papers or a sizing suspension to produce so-called LWC papers is selectively applied.

  • Patent number: 6579368
Abstract: An application apparatus is for applying a liquid or pasty medium to a moving base. The moving base is a surface of a material web in a case of direct application and a surface of a transfer element for transferring the medium to the material web in a case of indirect application, the material web being one of paper and cardboard. The application apparatus has an inlet side and an outlet side with respect to a direction of movement of the moving base. The application apparatus includes a carrying beam; an essentially rigid supporting unit provided on the carrying beam; a sealing doctor device positioned at the inlet side of the application apparatus, the sealing doctor device being fixedly attached to the supporting unit; and a metering doctor device positioned at the outlet side of the application apparatus, the metering doctor device being fixedly attached to the supporting unit. The sealing doctor device and the metering doctor device define an application chamber therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6494954
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for directly or indirectly applying a liquid or pasty application medium (2) onto one or both sides of a continuous surface (4), wherein the application medium (2) is applied to the surface (4) in a plurality of single application regions by means of a plurality of single application nozzles (12) spaced apart from one another side by side and/or in succession in the direction of width (B) and/or longitudinal direction of the surface (4) and clearly distanced (D) from the surface (4), the application medium (2) emerging from each of these nozzles, wherein adjacent single application regions each intersect (U) at least in part in their respective edge regions, causing a layer of application medium to be produced across substantially the entire width (B) of the surface (4) to be coated. The invention also relates to an apparatus for performing this method.

  • Patent number: 6444030
Abstract: An apparatus applies a liquid or viscid coating medium onto a moving material web, especially one made of paper or cardboard. A coating mechanism first applies the coating medium onto an applicator element or an applicator roll, which subsequently transfers the coating medium at a coating location onto the material web in the form of a coating layer. Furthermore, if so desired, a doctoring device can be positioned at a doctor station, adjacent to the coating location, on the downstream side relative to the movement of the material web for the purpose of smoothing and/or metering the coating. The coating apparatus incorporates an apparatus for the generation and/or supplying of a fluid, preferably steam. This apparatus is positioned adjacent to the coating location or to the doctor station on the downstream side relative to the movement L of the material web.

  • Patent number: 6372046
Abstract: A device designed for coating a material web with a coating medium includes a coater, a metering/smoothing device positioned downstream of the coater in the direction of feed of the material web, at a certain distance from the coater, and a support roll around which the material web is guided. Moreover, the material web is guided around the support roll only in the area of the metering/smoothing device, and it traverses essentially in a straight line between the coater and the support roll. In accordance to a first aspect of this invention, a support arrangement supports the material web in the straight web section between the coater and the support roll. In accordance to a second aspect of this invention, devices are provided which stabilize the material web in the area where the web traverses in a straight line.
