  • Publication number: 20220154034
Abstract: A water-based coating composition has a pH of at least 10, is substantially free of preservatives and comprises (A) a pigment; and (B) an aqueous polymer dispersion produced by free-radical aqueous emulsion polymerization of a mixture comprising i) 20 to 79.95 parts by weight of at least one first monomer whose homopolymer has a Tg <25° C., ii) 20 to 79.95 parts by weight of at least one second monomer whose homopolymer has a Tg>25° C., and iii) 0.05-5 parts by weight of at least one hydrolyzable silane of the formula (R1)mSi(R2)n(OR3)4?m?n, with n=0-3, m=0-3 and n+m=0-3, R1 and R2 independently being selected from functionalized or non-functionalized, unbranched or branched alkenyl, alkyl, aryl, and aralkyl radicals and R3 being selected from acyl (C(O)Z) radicals, where Z is an substituted or unsubstituted, unbranched or branched alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group or hydrogen.

  • Patent number: 7789959
Abstract: A description is given of coating compositions comprising at least one strongly basic agent to set a pH of at least 10, at least one selected vinyl ester copolymer, if desired, pigment and/or filler, and, if desired, further additives customary per se. The coating compositions can be stored without use of additional preservatives and can be used to coat substrates of all kinds.

  • Publication number: 20100130679
Abstract: The preparation of vinyl ester homo- or copolymers by emulsion polymerization is described. The process is performed in the presence of a polymerization-retarding component in at least two phases, the concentration of the vinyl ester monomer in the polymerization mixture in the first phase having been depleted by not more than 50% at the end of the first phase compared to the concentration of the vinyl ester monomer in the polymerization mixture at the start of the first phase, and the concentration of the vinyl ester monomer in the polymerization mixture in the second phase being depleted compared to the concentration at the end of the first phase. The retarding component is depleted during the first phase. In the second phase, the heat of reaction is removed by evaporative cooling.

  • Patent number: 5596035
Abstract: Autocrosslinking aqueous dispersions characterized by an MFT of from 0.degree. to about 50.degree. C. include at least one carbonyl-containing soft latex polymer having an MFT of below about 20.degree. C., at least one hard latex polymer having an MFT of above about 25.degree. C., and at least one polyfunctional carboxylic hydrazide. The aqueous polymer dispersions are used as binders for non-blocking, scratch-resistant and chemical-resistant coatings and as binders for clear coat and pigmented coating systems.
