More specifically, the novel inorganic brighteners are phosphors characterized in that they have (i) an absorption maximum in the range of from 350 to 375 nm; (ii) a steep decrease of the absorption band near 400 nm; (iii) a quantum yield of the phosphorescence of at least 0.8; and (iv) a phosphorescence maximum in the range between 415 and 445 nm.
