    Abstract: A brush seal for first and second spaced, adjoining members which are capable of undergoing universal relative displacement, the seal comprising a plurality of flexible bristles having opposite ends, one of which is secured in a clamp causing the bristles to fan outwardly towards the other end. The second member supports a joint defining a space with a throat into which the fan of bristles enter and are resiliently squeezed at the throat. The free ends of the bristles are spaced for free movement in the joint lengthwise of the bristles to accommodate relative movement of the members towards and away from one another. Relative movement of the members longitudinally in their respective planes in taken up by sliding of the bristles within the joint while relative movement of the members transversely in their respective planes is taken up by bending of the bristles at the throat. In the case of all relative movement of the members, the bristles maintain sealing contact with the joint at the throat.

    Abstract: A gas turbine engine with an exhaust gas heat exchanger comprising a connection between the heat-exchanger outlet and an inlet of a combustion chamber for supplying heated compressed air to the combustion chamber, the connection including two pipes with a flexible element in the form of a metal bellows to compensate for thermal expansion. The pipes are symmetrically disposed and laterally spaced with respect to a line connecting the axis of the gas turbine to the axis of the heat exchanger outlet such that the metal bellows converge at an acute angle in the direction towards the heat exchanger. At one end the pipes are connected to the outlet of the heat exchanger by a pipe elbow and at their other ends to an inlet casing of the combustion chamber. In this way, differential temperature displacements are minimized.

    Abstract: Apparatus for effecting heat exchange between first and second fluids in a heat exchanger in which a first fluid is conveyed through a plurality of spaced U-shaped tubes assembled in a matrix of the heat exchanger, and a second fluid is conveyed around the tubes of the matrix in a direction perpendicular to the matrix so that heat exchange takes place between the first and second fluids. The U-shaped tubes have bends facing a guide wall of the heat exchanger and form a gap therebetween to permit relative movement of the tubes and the guide wall, for example, due to differential thermal expansion and vibration. Flow of the second fluid through the gap is blocked by a resilient sealing element which resiliently accommodates the relative movement of the tubes with respect to the guide wall and damps vibration. The sealing element can be a flexible mat of elastic metal felt.

    Abstract: Apparatus for securing a component exposed to a relatively high temperature of a medium on a casing wall provided with thermal insulation to protect the wall from the medium, one section of the casing wall being devoid of thermal insulation and comprising a separate, thermoelastic flexible insulation element sandwiched between two plates, one of which is directly attached to the casing wall and the other of which supports the component. The unit formed by the insulation element sandwiched between the plates compensates for thermal expansion without reducing the casing insulation effect in the area of attachment of the component.

    Abstract: A heat exchanger comprising a plurality of spaced U-shaped tubes arranged in a matrix and disposed in a housing for the flow of hot gases around the tubes for heat exchange with a fluid conveyed in the tubes. The housing has a well surrounding the curved U-portions of the tubes of the matrix in spaced relation a shell is diposed between the wall and the curved U-portions of the tubes of the matrix. A flexible seal is mounted between the wall and the shell for preventing flow of hot gases therebetween, and at least one brush seal is mounted between the shell and the curved U-portions of the tubes of the matrix for blocking passage of hot gases therebetween. The brush seal comprises a plurality of bristles clamped at one end in a recess in the shell and fanning out towards the other free end to tangentially and sealingly contact the outermost row of the tubes of the matrix.
