  • Publication number: 20020143395
Abstract: A lens system for implantation in a human eye which makes it possible to restore accommodation. The lens system comprises one anterior lens (2) and a posterior lens (4), out of these two lenses one has positive and the other has negative lens power. Accommodation is achieved by varying the distance between the two lenses. This lens system can be made so as to generate large changes in optical power for small changes in position. It also allows the amount of change in optical power for any given amount of change in distance between the lenses to be selected relatively independently of the optical power of the overall lens system.

  • Patent number: 6117171
Abstract: An accommodating intraocular lens which is contained inside an encapsulating rigid shell so as to make it substantially insensitive to changes in the intraocular environment. A flexible transparent membrane divides the interior of the intraocular lens into two separate spaces containing fluid media with different refractive indices. The overall optical power of the intraocular lens may be altered by altering the curvature of the transparent membrane. The intraocular lens is equipped with haptics which extend inward into the interior of the intraocular lens and are attached to the encapsulating rigid shell in such a manner so as to be able to rotate around the place where the haptic crosses from the exterior to the interior of the intraocular lens. This allows the movement of the haptic to be transmitted to the interior of the intraocular lens where these movements are used to control the shape of the transparent membrane.

  • Patent number: 6048364
Abstract: An intraocular lens which can be deformed substantially so as to be inserted through a very small incision in the eye. The intraocular lens has an optical element (10) made from a flexible membrane (18) and is filled with a fluid optical medium. Attached to the optical element is a bladder (12) into which the fluid medium from the optical element (10) can be shunted. When inserting the intraocular lens the fluid medium is first shunted from the optical element (10) into the bladder (12); this reduces the size of the optical element (10). With the optical element (10) in this state of reduced size it is passed through the cornea through a small incision. With the optical element (10) now inside the eye and the bladder (12) outside the eye, the fluid medium is shunted back from the bladder (12) into the optical element (10). This reduces the size of the bladder (12) allowing also it to be passed through the small incision. In this way the whole intraocular lens is passed into the eye through a small incision.
