Patent number: 11738636Abstract: Filling methods and systems are provided for a conformable fuel tank. In one example, a system comprises an active thermal management arrangement for the conformable fuel tank. The active thermal management arrangement comprises one or more recirculation passage for mixing hot fuel distal to an inlet port of the conformable fuel tank with cool incoming fuel flowing to the inlet port.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2019Date of Patent: August 29, 2023Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Michael J. Veenstra, Bert Hobein, Florian Huth, Stella Papasavva, Matthew Riley, Michael Conrad

Publication number: 20230091244Abstract: A hydrogen fuel tank mounting system for a vehicle comprises a first mount for mounting a first portion of the fuel tank in a fixed position and a second mount for slidably mounting a second portion of the fuel tank. In this manner, the mounting system reduces stress on fuel system components when accommodating expansion and contraction of the hydrogen fuel tank, improving durability. The fuel tank may be a dual port fuel tank, and the first and second portions may be elongated neck portions. The fixed mount may be a bracket formed in two portions with a clearance between them. A sleeve may extend through at least part of the portions of the brackets to distribute shear forces away from an interface between those portions. The provision of a slidable mounting also allows pre-assembly of the fuel tank and mounts, facilitating installation of the hydrogen fuel system.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 21, 2022Publication date: March 23, 2023Inventors: Khizer Tufail, Guenter Grosch, Krystian Dylong, Rainer Kiehn, Klaus-Peter Heinig, Mauro Giroldo, Bert Hobein

Publication number: 20220009343Abstract: A method for producing a compressed gas tank for a motor vehicle includes inserting a bundle of heat-conducting elements through an opening in a housing of the compressed gas tank and exerting a force on the bundle that radially expands the bundle within the housing beyond the size of the opening. The heat-conducting elements may be helically wound about a central axis when inserted through the opening with a torsional force applied to unwind the elements while radially expanding and reducing axial length of the bundle. A compressed gas tank for a motor vehicle includes a plurality of heat-conducting elements including at least one tube within a tank housing that extend axially along the tank and radially within the housing to a size exceeding an opening of the housing. The tube is configured to circulate coolant to cool compressed gas within the tank.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 6, 2021Publication date: January 13, 2022Applicant: FORD GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIES, LLCInventors: Guenter Hans GROSCH, Bert HOBEIN, Thomas Werner STEINKOPF, Rolf Lorenz LOEFFLER, Julio OROZCO SANTOS COY, Stefan KAIMER, Florian HUTH

Patent number: 10619794Abstract: A pressure vessel includes a shell, a first boss, a second boss, and a reinforcement support. The shell defines an internal cavity. The first and second bosses are disposed within the cavity and respectively extend through opposing longitudinal ends of the shell. The first boss defines a longitudinally extending central orifice. The reinforcement support is disposed within the cavity, is secured to the first boss radially outward of the central orifice, extends from the first boss to the second boss, and is secured to the second boss.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2018Date of Patent: April 14, 2020Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Michael J. Veenstra, Bert Hobein, Stella Papasavva, Julio Orozco Santos Coy, Justin Purewal
