  • Patent number: 9970235
Abstract: A bottom hole assembly for drilling a deviated wellbore is provided. The bottom hole assembly includes a drill bit and a connected rotary steerable drilling system, or RSS. The RSS includes one or more orientation sensors, a steering unit configured to direct a force through the drill bit and against a rock formation, control electronics designed to send control signals to the steering unit, and power electronics. The steering unit transforms electrical power to linear displacement and force using linear actuators acting off-center to the longitudinal axis of the drill string.

  • Patent number: 9057223
Abstract: A technique facilitates drilling of wellbores or other types of bore holes in a variety of applications. A steerable system or other well tool is designed with a plurality of actuators which are positioned to provide controlled steering during a drilling operation. Each actuator includes at least one loose element or ball slidably mounted in a corresponding sleeve. Pressurized fluid is used to provide controlled movement of the elements along the corresponding sleeves of the actuators. The controlled movement of the elements assists in the provision of steering or other control over the well tool during the drilling operation.

Date of Patent: June 16, 2015
    Assignee: Schlumberger Technology Corporation
Inventors: Cedric Perrin, Geoffrey C. Downton, Christopher C. Bogath, Bertrand Lacour, Paul Crerar

  • Patent number: 7980328
Abstract: The invention provides rotary steerable devices and methods for use of rotary steerable devices. One aspect of the invention provides a rotary steerable device including: a cylinder configured for rotation in a wellbore, the cylinder having a slot and a gauge; and at least one cam received in the slot. The cam is configured for selective actuation between a first position, wherein the cam lies within the gauge of the cylinder, and a second position, wherein the cam is displaced out of the gauge of the cylinder.

  • Publication number: 20100101867
Abstract: A wellsite system includes a drill string suspended within a borehole, and a bottom hole assembly with a drill bit at its lower end, where the drill bit is a self stabilized and anti-whirl drill bit. The drill bit includes an interior cavity in fluid communication with the drill string, and a plurality of gauge pads located on the exterior of the drill bit. One or more of the gauge pads include an orifice in communication with the interior cavity, where the orifice is arranged at an angle relative to cutters fixed to the drill bit. The drill bit is configured such that a fluid continuously flows from each of the orifices.
