Patent number: 9999933Abstract: A double-sided milling insert for high feed milling of metal workpieces includes upper and lower faces facing in opposite directions and convex clearance surfaces extending between the upper and lower faces. Each one of the faces includes a recessed support surface. The support surfaces are substantially parallel to each other and have a cavity therein for receiving a fastening device. Intersections of the convex clearance surfaces with the upper and lower faces form convex cutting edges when seen in a plan view. A rake face is provided adjacent the convex cutting edges. Each convex cutting edge is concave when seen in a side view and includes a substantially straight cutting edge portion on each side of a curved cutting edge portion when seen in plan view. A milling tool with a plurality of such inserts and a method of high feed milling using this tool are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2016Date of Patent: June 19, 2018Assignee: SECO TOOLS ABInventor: Bertrand Riviere

Patent number: 9186733Abstract: A circular cutting insert includes a top surface having a top edge portion, a side surface having a clearance surface and a clearance edge portion. A cutting edge is formed between the clearance edge portion and the top edge portion. The clearance edge portion and the top edge portion form a wedge angle. The wedge angle varies as a function of circumferential position about a central axis of the insert relative to a point on the cutting edge.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2011Date of Patent: November 17, 2015Assignee: SECO TOOLS ABInventors: Bertrand Riviere, Francois Auzenat, Thomas Norstrom

Patent number: 9186732Abstract: A cutting insert includes a first mounting surface, a second mounting surface located on an opposite side of the insert from the first mounting surface, and a first side surface disposed between the first mounting surface and the second mounting surface. The insert further includes a first groove extending substantially diagonally across the first side surface and dividing the first side surface into discrete, separated, triangular first and second first side support surfaces. The first and second first side support surfaces are each bounded along first and second edges thereof by rake surfaces forming non-zero angles with the first and second side support surfaces and along third edges thereof by the groove.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 2011Date of Patent: November 17, 2015Assignee: SECO TOOLS ABInventors: Benjamin Michelet, Bertrand Riviere

Patent number: 8066454Abstract: The present invention relates to an indexable cutting insert for an end mill for machining of contours in a workpiece and to a milling tool. The cutting insert is asymmetrical in respect of a line through a hole in the cutting insert. The cutting insert includes two cutting edge portions. Each cutting edge portion comprises of a substantially straight cutting edge and a curved cutting edge along respective intersecting lines between a clearance surface and a chip surface. The curved cutting edges have different lengths. The cutting insert includes recesses in a bottom side of the cutting insert. The recesses are arranged on both sides of and at different distances from the hole of the cutting insert.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2005Date of Patent: November 29, 2011Assignee: Seco Tools ABInventors: Bertrand Riviere, Christer Jonsson, Matti Karonen
