  • Publication number: 20060056928
Abstract: The present invention relates to an indexable cutting insert for an end mill for machining of contours in a workpiece and to a milling tool. The cutting insert is asymmetrical in respect of a line through a hole in the cutting insert. The cutting insert comprises two cutting edge portions. Each cutting edge portion comprises a substantially straight cutting edge and a curved cutting edge along respective intersecting lines between a clearance surface and a rake face. The curved cutting edges have different lengths. The cutting insert has a bottom side and a first and a second opposite corner. The second corner is defined in plane view by a radius that is greater than, preferably at least twice as great as a radius of the first corner.

  • Patent number: 6929429
Abstract: A milling tool includes a rotary milling body forming pockets for receiving respective cutting inserts. Optional cassettes can be mounted in the pockets to receive the inserts. Each insert includes two side surfaces interconnected by four edge surfaces. The insert is double-sided in that each side surface includes two pairs of cutting edges. Each pair of cutting edges includes major and minor cutting edges meeting each other at a cutting corner of the insert. One of the side surfaces includes two cutting corners disposed at opposite ends of one of the edge surfaces, and the other side surface includes two cutting corners disposed at opposite ends of another, opposite edge surface. Each of those two opposite edge surfaces includes a recess for receiving an abutment surface situated at the respective pocket, for defining a stop surface for the insert from moving in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation.

  • Patent number: 6409439
Abstract: A holder for a machine tool includes a cone-shaped base body. One end of the base body has a larger diameter than the other end and includes an annular flange extending therearound. The flange includes first and second recesses formed therein. Each recess includes a bottom surface. The first and second recesses respectively form identical first distances from the bottom surface to an outer periphery of the flange. One of the recesses includes a hole. A depth-reducing element is securable in the hole such that an outer surface of the element is disposed between the bottom surface and the outer periphery, wherein an effective depth of the recess having the depth-reducing element is shorter than an effective depth of the other recess.

  • Patent number: 6126364
Abstract: A reamer for chip removing machining includes a holder having a line of pockets, each pocket including a support surface facing in a direction of feed of the holder. Cutting inserts are mounted in respective ones of the pockets and project out of the pocket at progressively greater distances. Clamping assemblies clamp respective inserts in their respective pockets. Each clamping assembly includes a shank projecting into a hole formed in the pocket, a clamping head fixed to the shank and situated in the pocket, and a spring yieldably biasing the shank and the clamping head to a position wherein the clamping head forces a rear surface of the insert against the support surface. By depressing a shank against its spring bias, a respective insert can be replaced.

  • Patent number: 6109838
Abstract: A face milling cutter comprises a holder adapted to be rotatable about an axis. A plurality of first cutting inserts, and a plurality of second cutting inserts are mounted in respective pockets of the holder. The first and second inserts alternate circumferentially with one another. The first and second inserts are identical and include a center hole for receiving a fastener screw. The central hole of the first inserts are oriented orthogonally relative to the center hole of the second inserts, whereby the first inserts are turned by about 90 degrees relative to the second inserts. The axial relationship of the second inserts relative to the first inserts is determined by shims disposed between the holder and respective ones of the second inserts.

  • Patent number: 6053671
Abstract: A cutting tool, preferably for milling, includes a holder and a cutting insert mounted thereon. The holder includes a seat upon which the insert is mounted, and an upstanding wall structure against which an edge face of the insert is pressed. The edge face has upper and lower portions separated by a step. The upper portion is frustoconical and is pressed against an upper wall of the wall structure to frictionally resist rotation of the insert about the insert's center axis. The lower portion of the edge face is polygonal and is adapted to engage a lower wall of the wall structure at a location spaced radially inwardly from a location where the upper portion and upper wall make contact. The lower portion rotates into engagement with the lower wall in response to cutting forces acting on the insert, to create an interference relationship between the lower portion and lower wall which prevents further rotation of the insert.

  • Patent number: 5403134
Abstract: A shank carries a milling tool and has a clamping portion adapted to be mounted in a bore of a chuck. The chuck has first and second locking screws which are engageable with first and second recesses, respectively, formed on a cylindrical outer surface of the clamping portion of the shank. The first recess is configured such that the first locking screw urges the clamping portion into the bore to press a surface of the shank against the chuck. The second recess comprises first and second longitudinally adjacent planar surfaces which form an angle with one another. Depending upon the angle of inclination of the second locking screw (that angle varies in different types of chucks), the second locking screw will flushly engage one or the other of the surfaces for preventing rotation of the shank within the bore.

  • Patent number: 5147158
Abstract: A cutting insert for chip forming machining comprises an upper rake face, a lower face, and an edge clearance face interconnecting said upper and lower faces. The edge clearance face includes a step located intermediate the upper and lower faces. The step defines a fracture zone so that in the event of insert breakage, the location of the breakage can be controlled. The portion of the insert located below the step defines, in effect, an integral shim.
