    Abstract: Described is a process for preparing cyclohexadiene derivatives having the generic formula: ##STR1## wherein R is one of C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, R.sub.1 is methyl when R.sub.2 is hydrogen comprising the step of reacting a 1-alkyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexa-1,3-diene or a 1-alkyl-3,4,4-trimethylcyclohexa-1,3-diene with oxygen in the presence of light, an ultraviolet sensitizer, and a basic catalyst; and fractionally distilling the resulting product.

The products produced by this process are useful for their organoleptic properties in perfumes, foodstuffs and tobaccos.

Addition of 2-butyl-3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1,4-dione to consumable materials is indicated to produce:(A) In perfumes, colognes and perfumed articles, deep, slightly woody, herbaceous aromas; and(B) In tobaccos and tobacco flavors, pungent, sweet, hay-, tea-, tobacco-like, floral and fruity notes, both prior to and on smoking in both the main stream and the side stream.
