Patent number: 10594824Abstract: A method for designating a class of data content for determining how the content will be handled by a content delivery network (CDN) into one of: a transport designation by which content is transported from an entrance node to one or more edge nodes; a caching designation by which the content is stored at one or more edge nodes; and a hybrid designation by which content is stored at a node in the CDN for subsequent transport to one or more edge nodes in the CDN, the method comprising: determining a set of one or more transport designation options; determining a set of one or more caching designation options; determining a set of one or more hybrid designation options; determining a normalised measure resource requirement for each of the transport, caching and hybrid designation options; and selecting one designation option for the class of content from all of the transport, caching and hybrid designation options by an optimisation function for selecting the designation option based on the determined normaliseType: GrantFiled: March 23, 2018Date of Patent: March 17, 2020Assignees: Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, Emirates Telecommunications Corporation, British Telecommunications PLCInventors: Carla Di Cairano-Gilfedder, Siddhartha Shakya, Beum Seuk Lee, Gilbert Owusu, Kin Poon

Patent number: 10432311Abstract: This invention relates to methods and systems for optimizing network catchment areas, in particular based on completion times of the customer premises. Embodiments of the invention aggregate different customer premises to form demarcated catchment areas by minimizing the overall weighted cost function comprising the distance and completion time within each catchment area, while also considering practical constraints. Embodiments of the invention allow network planners to specify their preferences of distance against time to produce cost-effective network schemes for very large numbers of customer premises and form network catchment areas without any overlapping.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2018Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignees: Khalifa University of Science and Technology, British Telecommunications PLC, Emirates Telecommunications CorporationInventors: Kin Fai Poon, Fabrice Saffre, Kaltham Saeed Khalfan Alromaithi, Anis Ouali, Beum Seuk Lee

Patent number: 10327165Abstract: This invention relates to methods and systems for monitoring mobile service quality in a mobile network and also for determining parts of a mobile network which need expansion or upgrade. Embodiments of the invention monitor the market impact and/or service quality, and determine an expansion ranking. The market impact, service quality and/or expansion ranking may view the network from a plurality of perspectives, including a location perspective, an historical time perspective, a future time perspective and/or a network element type perspective. The results of the monitoring and determining can be acted on by predetermined rules and/or actions to derive a list of prioritized expansion tasks for the network.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2016Date of Patent: June 18, 2019Assignees: Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, British Telecommunications PLC, Emirates Telecommunications CorporationInventors: Beum Seuk Lee, Dymitr Ruta, Kin Poon, Okung Ntofon, Sid Shakya, Gilbert Owusu

Patent number: 9773053Abstract: A system (100) for generating a computer readable data file representative of a mapping between a first representation of a set of concepts or of a data structure (e.g. a database schema) and a second representation of a set of concepts or of a data structure (e.g. an ontology), each representation comprising a plurality of complex representational elements (e.g. tables in a database schema and concepts in an ontology) each of which may itself include a number of associated subordinate representational elements (e.g. columns/fields of a table in a database schema and attributes of a concept in an ontology).Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2011Date of Patent: September 26, 2017Assignee: BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS public limited companyInventors: Beum Seuk Lee, Zhan Cui

Patent number: 9504061Abstract: In response to requests for their use of the resources by the applications, resources are first allocated to “inelastic” requests specified for performance at a specific time slot. A baseline allocation of resources is then determined which is the minimum amount of capacity that has to be used for efficient operation of the resources required to meet the requests. This baseline will include some additional capacity as the minimum efficient capacity is less than the maximum capacity. “Elastic” requests, specified for performance within a predetermined time range comprising two or more of the set of time slots, are then allocated so as to prioritize the use of this spare capacity, bringing actual usage up to at least the baseline allocation of resources. If further capacity is required to meet all the inelastic requests, further capacity is allocated and the baseline redefined to include it.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2015Date of Patent: November 22, 2016Assignees: British Telecommunications PLC, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, Emirates Telecommunications CorporationInventors: Sid Shakya, Gilbert Owusu, Beum Seuk Lee, Dymitr Ruta, Kin Poon, Okung Ntofon

Patent number: 9490871Abstract: Proposed is an improved method of determining the location of a common fault on a line in a telecommunications network. An overall performance measure is generated for each of the lines in the network based on various electrical measurements, highlighting potentially faulty lines. Nodes within the network also have a performance measure calculated based on the performance measures of the lines passing through the node. Examples of nodes include cross connection points, junction boxes, cabinets, and sections of cabling. A common faulty node is identified from all nodes along a line, based on the overall performance measures associated with those nodes. Then, all other faulty lines running through that node are identified. A distance to fault measurement is estimated for each of the identified faulty lines, using capacitance measurements for each line. A common fault location is determined based on aggregating the estimated distances to fault calculated for each of the identified faulty lines.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2013Date of Patent: November 8, 2016Assignee: BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS public limited companyInventors: Philip Martin Bull, Beum Seuk Lee

Publication number: 20110179074Abstract: An apparatus and a method for identifying data subtypes within data structures. The segmentation into a number of data subtypes enables SQL queries, or other types of query, to be made based on the data subtypes. This enhances the quality of the queries.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 29, 2009Publication date: July 21, 2011Inventors: Beum-Seuk Lee, Zhan Cui
