Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods of inhibiting infection by at least one microorganism or at least one virus by administering to an animal in an amount effective to inhibit infection a compound having a formula selected from the group consisting of or a salt thereof, such as a hydrochloride salt. At least one of R1-R13 in formula (I) or at least one of R1-R12 in formula (II) is —R14Z, where R14 is a substituted or unsubstituted linking group comprising from 1-12 carbon atoms, and Z is a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic group having from 1-12 carbon atoms.
