  • Patent number: 5783728
Abstract: An improved method is disclosed for the preparation of novel alkali metal diphosphinate salts by the reaction of an acetylenic compound with an alkali metal hypophosphite in the presence of a free radical source, the use of these novel compounds in further reactions to prepare diphosphonate compounds and diphosphinate containing adducts, oligomers and polymers and utilization of these compounds, polymers and oligomers to control calcium carbonate scale and mild steel corrosion in cooling water.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 7, 1997
Date of Patent: July 21, 1998
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
Inventors: James F. Kneller, Donald A. Johnson, Vytas Narutis, Binaifer S. Khambatta

  • Patent number: 5415783
Abstract: A method for increasing the effectiveness of ozone as a treating agent for alkaline cooling tower waters. This is accomplished by reducing pH of the solutions in contactor loops which supply ozone to cooling tower waters with an acidic substance.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 13, 1993
Date of Patent: May 16, 1995
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
Inventors: Donald A. Johnson, Richard J. Strittmatter, Binaifer S. Khambatta
  • Patent number: 5308498
Abstract: A method of inhibiting corrosion of iron and steel alloys in contact with industrial waters is claimed. The method comprises treating said waters with an effective corrosion inhibiting amount of a water soluble polymer having an average molecular weight ranging from about 2,000 to about 50,000, said polymer containing at least four mole percent of a hydroxamic acid mer unit.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 8, 1993
Date of Patent: May 3, 1994
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
Inventors: Dodd W. Fong, Binaifer S. Khambatta
  • Patent number: 5171451
Abstract: We have determined that simultaneous use in industrial waters of certain water soluble polymers in the presence of ozone is acceptable for scale control, corrosion control, microbiological control and the like. The preferred polymers used with ozone and those polymers that are homopolymers and copolymers containing at least 50 mole percent of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, mixtures thereof. Certain other monomers may be used with the acrylic acid and methacrylic acid monomers, and still function as scale inhibitors and corrosion inhibitors in the presence of ozone in industrial waters. The industrial waters are particularly recirculating cooling waters.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 28, 1991
Date of Patent: December 15, 1992
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
Inventors: Binaifer S. Khambatta, Paul R. Young, Kenneth E. Fulks
