  • Patent number: 6926767
Abstract: A storage stable aqueous dispersion useful in preparing sizing compositions for glass fibers contains a normally solid nucleating agent, a nonionic surfactant, and a base. The nucleating agent is a mixture of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. Also disclosed are the process of making the dispersion, and the use of the sized glass fibers in glass fiber reinforced polyolefin composites having improved mechanical properties such as tensile strength, flexural strength, and notched and unnotched IZOD.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 21, 2001
Date of Patent: August 9, 2005
    Assignee: Uniroyal Chemical Company, Inc.
    Inventor: Bing-Lin Chen
  • Patent number: 6689894
Abstract: A process for preparing fatty acid zinc salts comprising the steps of: stirring a slurry mixture comprising zinc oxide, at least one catalyst, and water at a temperature in the range of from about 55° C. to about 65° C.; adding at least one fatty acid in its liquid state to said stirred slurry mixture; and reacting the fatty acid with the zinc oxide in the presence of the catalyst in the water at a temperature of from about 60° C. to about 75° C. until substantially all of the fatty acid has reacted. The final product mixture can then be filtered and dried to give a fatty acid zinc salt in high yield.

  • Patent number: 5543451
Abstract: A method for increasing the slip of polyolefins and improving the adhesion of water based inks of polyolefins by incorporating into the polyolefin an effective amount of a lactamide having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is alkenyl having from about 12 to about 22 carbon atoms. Optionally, there can be included with the lactamide a finely divided inorganic material. Also disclosed are compositions of matter comprising a polyolefin, such as homopolymers and copolymers of ethylene and propylene, the aforedescribed lactamide and optionally a finely divided inorganic material. Also described is the new compound, N-erucyl lactamide.
