In some embodiments, the medical device includes a first compartmentalized microfluidic channel flanked by two microchannels and a second compartmentalized microfluidic channel. In some embodiments, the first and second compartmentalized microfluidic channels are situated vertically one to another. In some embodiments, the medical device further includes a porous membrane situated between the first and second compartmentalized microfluidic channels. In another embodiment, the present disclosure pertains to an organ-on-chip. In some embodiments, the organ-on-chip includes a top portion having three parallel microchannels. In some embodiments, the three parallel microchannels are separated by micropillars. In some embodiments, the organ-on-chip further includes a bottom portion having a fourth microchannel and a membrane between the top portion and the bottom portion.
