  • Patent number: 9072019
Abstract: The technology involves data processing during intra-site handover procedures. At least two directional antennas of a base station receive data carrying signals originating from a mobile units positioned in an intra-site handover area defined by the overlapping radio coverage of the antennas. The directional antennas performs an initial data signal detection of the received data signals resulting in detected data, which typically results in a loss of radio performance of the antenna. The detected data from the directional antennas is then processed to generate processed data. The performance loss is compensated by providing differential antenna gain of the directional antennas within the handover area.

  • Patent number: 8374607
Abstract: The technology involves data processing during intra-site handover procedures. At least two directional antennas of a base station receive user data carrying signals originating from a mobile units positioned in an intra-site handover area defined by the overlapping radio coverage of the antennas. The directional antennas performs an initial data signal detection of the received data signals resulting in detected user data, which typically results in a loss of radio performance of the antenna. The detected user data from the directional antennas is then jointly processed to generate processed user data. The performance loss is compensated by providing differential antenna gain of the directional antennas within the handover area. As a result, a similar radio coverage in this area as prior art solutions is obtained but with a less complex antenna-related design.

  • Patent number: 8320357
Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system for stationary or semi-stationary equipment includes a main node and a first plurality of terminals belonging to the same access subset and arranged to receive from and transmit to the main node. The main node transmits in at least one beam and receives in at least two beams, and the system indicates to the terminals that they may or may not transmit to the central node. Based upon certain criteria, two or more terminals located in different receive beams of the main node may be given permission to transmit to the central node simultaneously. Suitably, two or more terminals which are given permission to transmit simultaneously do so using the same frequency, or the same code, or the same time slot.

  • Publication number: 20090156235
Abstract: The invention discloses a wireless telecommunications device intended to communicate with an access point, such as a base station, in a wireless telecommunications system. The device comprises at least a first radio chain and at least a first and a second antenna, which antennas each have a certain radiation pattern, and which are used for receiving and transmitting information to and from the base station. The device includes a motion sensor for giving information on the spatial orientation of the device, and the device additionally includes means for utilizing said orientation information in order to control the total radiation pattern in the device's communication with the base station by controlling the phase and/or amplitude of signals associated with said first and second antennas.

  • Patent number: 6351243
Abstract: An antenna array for a base station for communication systems presenting a sparse element grid in a one-dimensional scanned array or multi-beam array is presented. The element spacing is primarily governed by scanning in a horizontal direction. In a triangular element grid the individual element spacing in a vertical direction is increased to an order of a wavelength (dy≈&lgr;) without generating grating lobes in visible space for the obtained main lobe, and maintaining about half a wavelength spacing in a horizontal direction (dx≈0.48&lgr;). This results in a reduction of radiating elements compared to a square grid of radiating elements arranged with a spacing of half a wavelength. By taking into account and limiting the horizontal scan, the vertical spacing may be further increased (dy≈1.25&lgr;−2&lgr;) to obtain an optimum sparse antenna element grid for a one-dimensional scanned beam or a multi-beam pattern e.g., for a communication system base station.

  • Patent number: 6225950
Abstract: An antenna presenting improved polarization isolation is disclosed which presents at least two columns of rectangular micro-strip or patch elements which each has a single, linear polarization. Each column presents radiation elements of either about +45 or −45 degrees. At least two such columns are combined such that an antenna is obtained which then becomes dual polarized. Furthermore the columns are arranged such that the patches are alternately sidewise displaced to form a herringbone pattern. In other words a next patch of one column is placed on the symmetry lines through nearby patches of the other column. In this way the coupling between the patches is minimized and a high isolation is achieved between the two states of polarization. The achieved two linear states of polarization are utilized separately for polarization diversity.
