  • Publication number: 20040160374
Abstract: An N-element rotational-symmetric array antenna can generate N fixed pencil-beams simultaneously with an omnidirectional beam. An N×N Butler matrix can be used to feed the array antenna, using fewer than N input ports of the Butler matrix to produce the pencil-beams. One or more of the modes generated by the Butler matrix can be individually accessed to produce one or more corresponding omnidirectional beams. The N×N Butler matrix can be driven by a feed network that provides both power dividing and beam-steering, which permits simultaneous generation of the N pencil-beams.

  • Patent number: 6697643
Abstract: The present invention is directed to cellular systems and methods for providing a multi-beam antenna configuration within a base station without utilizing duplex filters. The multi-beam antenna configuration of the present invention produces overlaid beams in both the uplink and downlink to cover the same area. Each beam has orthogonally oriented polarization directions (e.g., linear polarized slanted ±45°) for the uplink and downlink. Adjacent uplink beams shall also have shifted polarization directions in order to attain polarization diversity between different beams. In order to implement this polarization configuration, for each beam, there is a selective filter in front of the low noise amplifier for the uplink, and no duplex filter in front of the amplifier in the downlink direction.

  • Patent number: 6577879
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for allowing a base station to simultaneously transmit signals in several beams of a multi-beam antenna configuration. Antenna pattern control is maintained by employing orthogonal polarization orientation for every other beam. For example, the two orthogonal polarization directions can be approximately linear polarization slanted ±45°. To be able to transmit simultaneously in an arbitrary combination of more than one beam, the BS antenna array includes a separate feeder cable for each combination of beams corresponding to a particular polarization, from one feeder per beam to one feeder with all beams of that polarization.

  • Patent number: 6531984
Abstract: A dual-polarized antenna (10) with good isolation between feed ports (13a, 13b) and high similarity with respect to the radiation patterns is provided. An antenna (10) includes a patch (11), four symmetrically arranged feed structures (12a-12d, 15), two feed ports (13, 13b) and a feed network (14). Radiation pattern similarity is obtained by the pair-wise symmetrical, orthogonal layout of the feed structures (12a-12d, 15). Good isolation between feed ports (13a, 13b) is achieved through a feed network (14) divided into two network parts (14a, 14b) where each network part (14a, 14b) is designed so that each coupling between a network part (14a, 14b) and a feed structure (12a12d, 15) belonging to the other polarization is cancelled by a mirrored coupling with the other feed structure (12a-12d, 15) belonging to the polarization. In addition, a network part (14a, 14b) is laid out so that its corresponding feed structures (12a-12d, 15) are fed with supporting signals of equal magnitude.

  • Patent number: 6133877
Abstract: A device for microstrip distribution networks and for group antennas for the suppression of unwanted modes on the distribution network side of a microstrip distribution network. This thereby avoids, among other things, unwanted coupling between antenna elements connected to the microstrip distribution network. A waveguide substructure in principle designed as a U of extruded aluminium, is connected to the microstrip distribution network along two connection lines with at least two electrically-conductive connections to the ground plane of the microstrip distribution network along each connection line. Together with at least part of the ground plane, the waveguide substructure forms a waveguide structure. The waveguide structure is dimensioned so that it has a cut-off frequency that is higher than the highest frequency that is used in the microstrip distribution network.
