  • Patent number: 10953982
Abstract: A rotorcraft is provided and includes a fuselage. The fuselage includes drag generating portions, a main rotor assembly and an auxiliary propulsor having an expected propulsion efficiency. The auxiliary propulsor is disposed to ingest boundary layer flows and in wake regions associated with the drag generating portions and is provided with a corresponding increase in the expected propulsion efficiency thereof.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 29, 2015
Date of Patent: March 23, 2021
    Assignee: Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation
Inventors: Blake Almy Moffitt, Brian E. Wake, Peter F. Lorber
  • Patent number: 10899440
Abstract: A rotor blade for a rotary wing aircraft and a tip for the rotor blade. The rotor blade includes a blade root, a blade tip and a blade body that extends from the blade root to the blade tip. The blade tip includes: a continuously swept leading edge, a compound trailing edge, and a continuous anhedral.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 10086935
Abstract: A propulsor system for a rotary winged aircraft includes a propeller including having a propeller hub rotatable about a propeller axis and a plurality of propeller blades secured to and extending radially outwardly from the propeller hub. The propeller is oriented on the rotary winged aircraft to provide forward thrust for the rotary winged aircraft when the propeller is rotated about the propeller hub. A plurality of guide vanes non rotatable about the propeller axis are positioned upstream of the plurality of propeller blades. The plurality of guide vanes are positioned to turn an airflow flowing into the plurality or propeller blades, thereby reducing an angle of attack of the plurality of propeller blades relative to the airflow.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 9, 2015
Date of Patent: October 2, 2018
    Assignee: SIKORSKY AIRCRAFT CORPORATION
Inventors: Colman D. Shattuck, Peter F. Lorber, Blake Almy Moffitt, Peter J. Germanowski, Brian E. Wake, Steven D. Weiner

  • Patent number: 9688395
Abstract: A boundary layer ingesting (BLI) blade having a span is provided and includes a root section connectable to a hub, a tip section disposable at a distance from the hub and having a pitch and a body extending in a spanwise dimension from the root section to the tip section. The root section has a local pitch from the root section to about a 70% span location, which is less than the pitch at the tip section, to thereby reduce local angles of attack in a boundary layer region defined in and around the root section.
