Abstract: The present invention is directed to processes and methods for recycling the waste products from the manufacture of cellulose acetate materials, using the example of cigarette butt manufacturing, in this case, but also applies to cellulose acetate production for other materials. Once the cellulose acetate containing materials are processed, they may be acceptable for use in a multitude of applications from insulation to reinforcements and decorative pieces.

Abstract: A process and method for recycling carpet is disclosed. The process and method involves the liberation and separation of desirable carpet face fibers from the carpet backing materials. The present invention eliminates face fiber shearing. In the present process, the secondary layer of the carpet backing is removed either manually or mechanically. Then, the bottom of the primary backing layer of the carpet with the bottom of the face fiber “U's” exposed, is mechanically grip-abraded by a rubber material. The grip-abrasion of the rubber or rubber-like material across the bottom of the primary carpet backing layer loosens the glue and grips and pulls the face fiber from the primary backing without destructing primary or secondary backing. The liberation and separation of face fibers from the backing materials using this method produces the highest yield of usable materials compared to any other method.

The process and method involves reacting ground cigarette butts with a solvent and mineral spirits and then shaping and drying the resultant product. Once the processed cigarette butts have hardened or cured the material may be formed into useful objects with no leaching of chemicals upon contact with water.

Abstract: A coating composition particularly suitable for coating poly(phenylene oxide) comprises aqueous medium-dispersed particles of: A) between about 30 and about 35 wt %, of a first styrene-acrylic polymer formed of monomers, between about 50 and about 80 mole % of which monomers are styrene or substituted styrene monomers, between about 2 and about 15 mole percent of which monomers are acrylonitrile, and between about 18 and about 48 mole percent of which are acrylic monomers, said first styrene-acrylic polymer having an acid number of about 15 or below; B) between about 30 and 35 wt %, of an acrylic second polymer formed of monomers, at least about 90 mole percent of which monomers are acrylate monomers, balance other &agr;, &bgr;-ethylenically unsaturated monomers, said acrylic second polymer having an acid number between 0 and about 25; and C) between about 30 and about 40 wt % of an acrylic-urethane hybrid polymer.
