Publication number: 20230235906Abstract: Methods, controllers, and the like are disclosed that can include determining an occurrence of an event (where the occurrence of the event is determined by a controller of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, and the HVAC system controls a temperature of air in an environment by controlling a setpoint temperature of conditioned air provided by the HVAC system to the environment). Such methods, controllers, and the like can further include, in response to a determination that the event has occurred, altering the temperature of the air in the environment by executing a sleep profile, where the sleep profile is executed by the controller and execution of the sleep profile adjusts the setpoint temperature as a function of time over a time period, such that the temperature of the air in the environment leads an occupant in the environment into a sleep state or a wakeful state.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 5, 2023Publication date: July 27, 2023Inventors: Christopher Blake Smith, John S. Patent number: 11668480Abstract: Improvements to an HVAC thermostat include a sleep-enhancing feature which regulates the target temperature of the HVAC system according to a temperature profile which complements the natural changes in body temperature of a person during sleep. The timing of the temperature profile is advanced to cause room temperature to decrease before the natural decrease in body temperature is expected to occur, thereby helping lead a person into sleep without the use of pharmaceuticals or other artificial sleeping aids. The temperature profile causes room temperature to increase towards the end of the sleep period, thus avoiding disruptions of sleep when body temperature is lowest or during REM stages of sleep when the human body's ability to thermo-regulate is diminished. The rate of change of the target environment temperature is controlled to further enhance the quality and duration of sleep.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2017Date of Patent: June 6, 2023Assignee: Trane International Inc.Inventors: Christopher Blake Smith, John S. Patent number: 11473700Abstract: A clamp includes first and second bands, a pair of strut attachment legs, a screw, and a screw housing. Each band has a first end and a second end. The first band defines slots extending across a width thereof and disposed adjacent to the second end thereof. Each strut attachment leg is fixed to the first end of one of the bands. The screw housing receives the second ends of the bands and captures the screw while allowing the screw to rotate. The clamp secures a tube to a strut when the clamp is placed over the tube, the strut attachment legs are positioned relative to the strut so that notches in the strut attachment legs receive at least one of the flanges on the strut, and the screw is rotated to draw the first band further into the screw housing and thereby tighten the clamp around the tube.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2021Date of Patent: October 18, 2022Assignee: ZSI-Foster, Inc.Inventors: Thomas D. Wright, Joshua Blake Smith

Patent number: 11162702Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for validating the installation and operation of a fault detection and diagnostic module that monitors a component of an HVAC system. A remote diagnostic server is in operative communication with the HVAC system, and with the fault detection and diagnostic module. A user device communicates data to the remote diagnostic server that defines an association between the fault detection and diagnostic module and the HVAC system. The remote diagnostic server initiates an installation validation by sending a command to the HVAC system that causes the monitored component to initiate an event that is expected to be reported by the fault detection and diagnostic module. For example, a fan motor is turned on. If correctly installed, the fault detection and diagnostic module senses the event, and reports the event to the remote diagnostic server, which confirms the association. The remote diagnostic server sends a message to the user device indicating the result of the validation.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2017Date of Patent: November 2, 2021Assignee: Trane International Inc.Inventors: Daniel John Blair, Drew Whitehurst, Carl L.
