  • Patent number: 6771964
Abstract: A method and a wireless telecommunication system of performing network-assisted handover of calls between a serving network and another wireless network that employs communication protocols different from those of the serving network. A message is sent from a mobile station of a user to the serving wireless network, which includes an indication that the mobile station is capable of communicating with the neighboring wireless network. Information relating to the communication characteristics of the neighboring wireless network is also sent from the serving wireless network to the mobile station. Using the information relating to the communication characteristics of the neighboring wireless network, the mobile station receives radio signals from the neighboring wireless network. The quality of the radio signals between the mobile station and the neighboring wireless network is measured.

  • Publication number: 20040148425
Abstract: The present invention concerns a method for transmitting application packet data via a first packet data network between a terminal and a second packet data network, said application packet data being transmitted using an application protocol operated on top of a protocol stack, said protocol stack comprising plural individual stacke protocol layers adopted for said transmission within said first packet data network, wherein said application packet data are addressed to the terminal and distinguishable according to a service type implemented for said terminal using said application, the method comprising the steps of: detecting said service type, and dependent on the transmission direction of said application packet data, removing and/or adding at least one of said plural individual protocol layers for a specific one of detected service type. The present invention also concerns accordingly adapted terminals and network nodes.

  • Patent number: 6741849
Abstract: A mobile communication system that proposes a new charging principle, according to which the roaming leg is paid entirely by the party who forwards the call to a mobile subscriber. In an exemplary embodiment, the call is first routed to the exchange of subscriber B, who has forwarded his calls. After determining that the call is to be forwarded to a mobile subscriber C, the exchange routes the call to the gateway mobile switching center (GMSC) capable of making interrogations to the home location register of subscriber C. When the charging record for the call is generated, the called subscriber B is charged for the leg between the GMSC and subscriber C. Thus, subscriber C does not have to pay for calls addressed to subscriber B. To minimize the call costs to subscriber B, as direct a route as possible is preferably used on the leg between the GMSC and subscriber C.
